Check Out Alexus Murray’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Murray

Hi Alexus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started playing softball at the age of 5. Thankful for both my parents taking a leap of faith, and choosing that sport for me to fall in love with. However, I didn’t become a catcher until I got to middle school. I always played 3rd base or outfield growing up, but in the 6th grade Coach Higg transitioned me to behind the plate and my love for the game grew deeper. I could see the game from a different perspective and I was loving every moment of it. I got recruited to play in college as a catcher, won many accolades, and when I was finished with college, I decided the game of softball wasn’t done with me yet. I wanted to pour back into the game because it had given so much to me. I owe all of Backstop Academy’s success to God, my family, Adrienne Chery and Lacey Williams.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. Producing a service and being criticized day in and day out is not for the weak. I had to learn that not everyone was going to enjoy my coaching style, and people would come and go, and I couldn’t be offended or let it affect me. I had to learn to just continue to do what I do best and the rest would fall into place.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Backstop Academy is a softball catching instruction institution. We are known for shaping and developing catchers to their highest potential. I’m most proud of where I started and where I am now. I never thought a little girl from Buford would be working with Gwinnett’s rec programs, doing private lessons, and hosting camps with people from all over. I’m walking in my purpose and the training I produce, you can’t find anywhere else.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Buford is a championship city with a championship mindset. The best of the best come to train and work here. I am a 4 time softball state champion from buford high school, 2012-2015.
Buford is home. My grandfather retired after working in the school system for 48 years. My aunt retired after working in the school system for 40+ years. My dad will soon retire after working in the school system since he was 17 years old. All of my siblings that attended Buford are champions in some capacity. You won’t catch a Buford game with out seeing both my aunts working in the ticket booth. Buford is family, tradition, and excellence.
