Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Blalock.
Hi Courtney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid , I was always so intrigued by self expression. Growing up in the 00’s really helped shape that ideology. For as long as I could remember, I was obsessed with being a teen or being in 20s. I was always getting dress coded (all grades), changing my outfit after I left home and being known to stand out. Back then instagram was really starting to take off, I was a twitter girl but my friend in 8th grade made my page for me because I was the only one not on it. I started using the page around freshman year of high school though. I had it act as my digital diary really. I was always posting mood boards, makeup looks, outfits etc. Over time, around my sophomore year, I got connected with other teens in atlanta. This is where the birth of my era of the underground began. We would all meet at this event that the High Museum would throw called “teen night”. Trust me, ask any prominent artist today from atlanta’s underground about teen night at the high , they’ll know. From there, me and my friends would be at every atlanta event. I remember the first Afro-Punk hosted in Atlanta, the various random events held at what they now call “the met” , the Kiki balls, the underground rap shows, you name it. This is how built relationships with a good amount of the underground today , it was organic. By the time I got to college these relationships blossomed as we all bloomed into our own lanes. I originally was doing a lot of modeling. I just had so many visions of what I wished these shoots/shows would look like though. So I took a chance and hit up my friend Mercury, she’s a music artist that was starting her career so it was perfect. She had a song called “Slob on my Kat” and sure enough, it needed a video. So, I thought, this is my chance, I creative directed the video as well as doing the costume design. I didn’t have much at the time so I reworked thrifted clothes into short hoochie inspired outfits. I was lucky to even source a vintage baby phat two piece for Mercury. Sidenote: I also randomly became her tour dj . Since then I’ve worked on set for another atlanta artist, Jean Deaux in costume design for a short film they were making. I kept my social media and socialite presence up over the years, working on projects left and right. I was able to do creative direction for not only artist but for some fashion brands as well. Im currently getting into my Stylist bag. Again, I have always loved self expression so I feel that styling makes my inner child smile. I’ve always wanted a big closet with a killer heel collection and styling allows me to fulfil those dreams. My first styling jobs include a couple NY based artist, Sterling Cupid and Baby Osama. You’ll be able to see me in a nasty heel , purse on shoulder and spirits high as I’m doing some sort of direction job around the city. Stay tuned xoxo
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What’s a story without some struggles ? BORING! Resiliance is a very desirable trait to me. Most of obstacles came in the form of personal struggles. Usually a relationship with a jealous man, wannabe mean girls who aren’t nearly as relevant as they’ve convinced themselves (no shade but shade) and just adjusting to the world as a transitioning adult in the current state of the economy. All of these things I have overcome, well the haters will never go away but for every hater there’s several people who genuinely support me. The only other thing I can think of is just navigating as a woman. It honestly comes down to how you carry yourself. Of course I have been crucified for setting boundaries that should be respected, but it’s a part of the game.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most known for killing these h***s with a nasty heel and a nasty purse! #periodt But more so I am known for my vision !
Creative direction has been my bread and butter. Styling is my new and improved product and trust me , once I get more looks together , it will be flying off the shelves #okay From directing music videos and djing for the artist Mercury, to styling your fav underground artists (baby osama and sterling cupid), I can be seen around town strutting my way around a set or live exhibit.
Any big plans?
I see myself doing way more work in styling. Fun things like music videos, Fashion ads and for artist performances. I would love to be mentored by Law Roach. I want to creative direct a few runway shows for my fav fashion houses. As far as changes , I have been dabbling in the visual arts realm and even helped art direct an exhibit recently, more coming soon my loves.
