Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Knight.
Curtis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in water safety started over 23 years ago when I began working as a teenage lifeguard. I quickly realized I had a natural knack for connecting with children and managing the pool dynamic in a way that other instructors struggled with crying and fears just didn’t bother me.
By 2005, that passion turned into a leadership career. I moved up the ranks to become a Regional Manager, overseeing swim schools across both Las Vegas and California. Around that same time, in 2006, I launched 123swimminglessons.com as a blog website, recognizing early on that parents were starving for reliable, accessible information on swimming development.
After a powerful chapter living in Australia where I worked as an MC and entertainer, honing my performance skills, public speaking, personality, and understanding of music and I returned to Las Vegas in 2016. I decided to pour everything I had into private, in-home swim instruction. To stand out, I built a unique marketing strategy: rewriting popular rap songs into catchy, educational tunes about water safety and my teaching style.
The strategy clicked. Within a few years, the business completely took off. Today, I’ve been teaching full-time in the pool for the last six years, specializing in high-profile, prominent families who trust me to bring a unique blend of corporate expertise, high-energy entertainment, and decades of proven swimming instruction right to their backyards.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has NOT been a smooth ride, and if I’m being honest, my biggest regret is just not jumping in full-time sooner!
The early struggles weren’t about the coaching, they were about visibility and logistics. When I committed to this back in 2016, the landscape was shifting entirely to social media. I knew there was a massive market for high-quality, in-home swim instruction in Las Vegas, but capturing the right audience’s attention was incredibly difficult at first. I actually threw a lot of money at social media marketing early on with zero results.
That failure ended up being my biggest learning curve. I had to completely teach myself how to navigate digital platforms, figure out what content actually resonated with parents, and target the specific zip codes I wanted to serve.
Beyond marketing, the daily logistics were and honestly, still can be a puzzle. Mapping out a full day of driving from home to home across the valley while maximizing pool time is no joke. But pushing through those early marketing hurdles is exactly what allowed me to find my rhythm, dial in my strategy, and ultimately connect with the families I serve today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What I Do & My Specialization:
I am an in-home, private swim instructor. I travel directly to my clients’ pools, specializing primarily in beginner swimmers of all ages, from babies to adults. My true sweet spot is working with children who cannot swim at all or who are completely terrified of the water. While water safety is the ultimate goal, I don’t teach rigid, government-certified programs or ISR (Infant Swimming Resource). I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every single child is an individual, so my curriculum is completely customized to the specific personality and needs of the person in front of me.
What Sets Me Apart:
Two major things set me apart from anyone else in the industry. First is my artistry and marketing; nobody else is rewriting popular hip-hop and rap songs to teach water safety and promote their business! Second, and most importantly, I don’t just view myself as a swim instructor—I am a child communicator. I have a God-given gift for connecting with children. The screaming, the crying, the kicking, and the intense fear that often rattle other instructors don’t phase me at all. I understand exactly how to navigate those tough moments, communicate through the fear, and guide them safely to the other side.
What I Am Most Proud Of:
I am incredibly proud of the fact that I build genuine, deep confidence in every single child who gets in the water with me. When you can take a child who is absolutely terrified, work them through the hard parts, and then see them safely jumping into the pool with a massive smile on their face that is everything. I am proud to say that after all these years, I haven’t come across a single child I’ve taught who didn’t successfully learn how to swim. Witnessing that transformation and giving families total peace of mind is my greatest achievement.

2. Service Areas & Availability
“I service families all across the Las Vegas Valley, traveling primarily to Summerlin, the Southwest, Southern Highlands, Henderson, and the Centennial area. Because I provide dedicated, one-on-one private instruction, my schedule fills up months—and often a full year—in advance.”
3. What’s Next (Book & YouTube Show)
“I’m taking my water safety mission beyond the pool! I recently published my children’s book, Super Swimmer Academy! With Coach Curtis, on Amazon. Plus, my son and I are launching a new show on my YouTube channel (@123SwimmingLessons). He’s been filming my actual lessons to give parents an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at my real-time teaching techniques and how I help kids overcome their fears.
