Check Out Damaris Rosalyn’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damaris Rosalyn.

Hi Damaris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m the seventh of ten children, and growing up in such a large family was always an adventure. We started out in a small two-bedroom, one-bathroom home, which meant there was never a dull moment. As you can imagine, sharing one bathroom with that many people came with its challenges. Eventually, my father decided we needed more space and took on the incredible task of creating a better home for all of us.

Although all ten of us share the same parents, my mother passed away when I was only four years old. Losing her at such a young age was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, and it’s something I still carry with me today. Not knowing a mother’s love is a pain I wouldn’t wish on anyone. At the same time, I’m incredibly grateful for my father and grandmother, who stepped in and made sure my siblings and I were loved, supported, and cared for.

My father has always been one of my greatest inspirations. He worked as a firefighter and somehow managed to raise ten children on his own while transforming a condemned duplex into a beautiful six-bedroom, three-bathroom home. His determination, resilience, and work ethic taught me what perseverance truly looks like.

My name also carries a special meaning. My first name, Damaris, was chosen by my mother from the Bible in Acts 17:34, and my middle name, Rosalyn, was her own first name. Growing up, my family always pronounced Damaris as “Duh-Mary-Is,” which often surprises people. I love that my name is unique because it naturally starts conversations and keeps my mother’s memory alive.

Professionally, I go by Damaris Rosalyn. While some people ask why I don’t use my full name, I chose to simplify it for creative purposes. My first and middle names are deeply connected to my identity, and they’ll always remain a part of who I am.

Whenever I need encouragement or find myself doubting what’s possible, I return to the scripture my mother named me after. It reminds me that faith doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes believing is enough.

My journey into acting began unexpectedly when one of my sisters asked if I wanted to appear in a local auto commercial. I said yes, and that experience changed everything. The commercial aired throughout Toledo and parts of Detroit, and people constantly recognized me from it. Seeing that reaction sparked something inside me. For the first time, I realized I loved performing and wanted to pursue it seriously.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any industry, the entertainment business comes with its challenges. When you’re young, ambitious, and eager to break into the industry, it can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between genuine opportunities and people who are looking to take advantage of your dreams.

One of my earliest lessons came while I was still in college. Someone reached out to me claiming to be a casting director with connections to major productions. He had photos with well-known industry figures and seemed legitimate. Looking back, he knew exactly how to present himself in a way that would gain the trust of aspiring actors.

At the time, I was excited and eager to pursue every opportunity that came my way. He asked for my acting résumé, measurements, and additional materials, which seemed normal enough. As our conversations continued, however, the requests became increasingly unprofessional. Something in my spirit told me that the situation wasn’t right, but I was so focused on the possibility of landing a major role that I ignored my instincts.

Eventually, I realized that the opportunity was not legitimate. It was a disappointing experience, but it taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my career: never let desperation override discernment.

That experience became an important turning point for me. It taught me to trust my intuition, ask more questions, research opportunities thoroughly, and seek guidance from trusted professionals before moving forward. As I’ve gained experience in the industry and built a strong support system, I’ve become much more confident in recognizing red flags and protecting myself.

Today, I view that experience as part of my growth. While it was an unfortunate lesson, it helped me develop the confidence, wisdom, and professionalism that I carry with me now. The entertainment industry still has its challenges, but experience has taught me that protecting your peace, your boundaries, and your integrity is just as important as pursuing your dreams.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an actress, host, content creator, and storyteller based in Atlanta. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on independent films, web series, reality programming, comedy sketches, and major productions. My background in Media Communication and Theatre from the University of Toledo gave me a strong foundation, but most of my growth has come from continuously putting myself out there, taking classes, collaborating with other creatives, and learning through experience.

What I specialize in is authenticity. Whether I’m performing in a dramatic role, hosting a show, or creating comedic content, I focus on bringing genuine emotion and relatability to every project. I believe audiences connect with honesty more than perfection, and that’s something I strive to bring to every character I portray.

One thing people often notice about me is my versatility. I’ve worked on everything from comedy skits and web series to feature films and reality television. I enjoy exploring different genres because every role teaches me something new about people and about myself.

What I’m most proud of is taking a leap of faith and moving to Atlanta to pursue my dreams. I was the first person in my family to leave Ohio and start over somewhere completely new. Building a career in entertainment without having all the answers required courage, persistence, and faith. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and the relationships I’ve built along the way.

When it comes to acting, my process is simple: I remember where I came from. To step into another character’s emotions, I connect with my own life experiences. Acting, to me, is not about pretending to be someone else. It’s about being fully present and understanding the journey a character is on. Every person is becoming something, and every character is too. My job is to tell that story truthfully.

What sets me apart is my mindset. I genuinely believe in growth, manifestation, and staying connected to my purpose. I stay inspired through personal development, reading books like *The Secret*, listening to affirmation artists such as Londrelle, Lizzy Jeff, and Toni Jones, and surrounding myself with positive communities like Hills4ATL. Those practices help me stay grounded, focused, and open to opportunities.

I’m also someone who isn’t afraid to create my own opportunities. From producing content and collaborating with comedians to hosting reality shows and building relationships within the industry, I’ve learned that success comes from taking action. I don’t wait for doors to open—I knock, and sometimes I build the door myself.

At the end of the day, I want people to remember me as someone who brought positive energy, authenticity, and heart to every project. My career is still growing, but I’m proud of the journey so far and excited for everything that’s ahead.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I would love to find a mentor someday, but until then, I’ve learned how important it is to encourage myself and keep moving forward. I stay motivated by remembering that there are people watching me, especially my nieces and nephews. Knowing that they look up to me inspires me to continue chasing my dreams, even on the days when things feel uncertain.

As far as networking goes, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to keep talking to people—even if you’re shy. Some of the best opportunities in my life have come from simple conversations. You never know who someone knows, what doors they can open, or how they may be able to help you.

I also believe in being honest about what you want out of life. Don’t be afraid to tell people your goals and dreams. The more you speak them into existence, the more likely you are to connect with someone who can point you in the right direction. Sometimes the person you’re talking to isn’t the opportunity—they’re connected to the opportunity.

Another thing I’ve learned is that people are always watching, even when you don’t realize it. Someone may see a skit you posted months ago, remember your work, and reach out when the right opportunity comes along. That’s why I try to show up consistently and put my best foot forward in everything I do.

My advice is simple: stay visible, stay kind, keep creating, and keep introducing yourself. Opportunities often come from the relationships you build along the way. You never know which conversation, collaboration, or social media post could change your life.
