Today we’d like to introduce you to DeeDee Trotter.
Hi DeeDee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and sports weren’t a part of my life at all. Everything changed when my parents divorced and my mom, brother, and I moved to Atlanta. Looking back, what felt like one of the hardest seasons of my childhood ended up becoming one of the greatest blessings of my life.
After moving to Georgia, I started playing sports at the Doraville Recreation Center. Basketball quickly became my first love, and by the age of 10, I had a dream of playing basketball at the University of Tennessee for the legendary Pat Summitt. That dream gave me purpose and direction. It taught me how to work for something bigger than myself.
Life had a different plan. While I never played basketball at Tennessee, I earned a scholarship in track and field and went on to become an NCAA Champion, SEC Champion, Regional Champion, school record holder, Olympic medalist, and professional athlete. I competed on three Olympic teams, earned two Olympic gold medals and one bronze medal, signed a professional contract with Adidas, and became the first female athlete in University of Tennessee history to turn professional before completing four years of eligibility. Years later, I was inducted into the University of Tennessee Hall of Fame.
What I’ve learned is that dreams don’t always come true the way we imagine them. Sometimes God has a bigger vision for our lives than we can see for ourselves. That 10-year-old girl dreamed of Tennessee through basketball, but God opened the door through track and field and gave me opportunities I never could have imagined.
After 13 years as a professional athlete, I retired at age 33 and had to figure out what came next. Like many athletes, I had spent most of my life pursuing one dream. Now it was time to discover a new purpose.
That journey led me to keynote speaking and mental performance coaching. Speaking came very naturally to me, and I truly believe it is where God called me to serve. I had the opportunity to work with Education First, traveling around the world and speaking to students and organizations. In one year alone, I spoke at more than 100 events. Through that experience, I realized my passion was helping people discover the greatness within themselves.
Today, I primarily work with corporate organizations, helping leaders and teams learn how to transform pressure into power, strengthen their mindset, and perform at a higher level. I also enjoy working with athletes, schools, and universities because I believe young people need these tools now more than ever. My mission is simple: help people unleash their inner champion and realize they are capable of more than they think.
Then COVID changed everything.
The world shut down, travel stopped, and the division I was working in was eliminated. What initially felt like a setback became another example of God redirecting my path.
Long before sports entered my life, I had another dream. Around the age of eight, I wanted to be a chef. In fact, I still have a scar from accidentally stabbing myself while pretending to be one as a child. Looking back, that scar feels like a reminder of a dream that God planted in my heart long before I understood it.
In 2020, I decided to attend culinary school. I graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a perfect 4.0 GPA, was named valedictorian, and earned recognition as the top culinary student. Within six months of graduating, I became an Executive Pastry Chef at one of Georgia’s premier golf clubs. After three and a half years in that role, I knew it was time to build something of my own.
That’s when I launched Taste of Gold Bakery.
Today, Taste of Gold Bakery serves clients throughout metro Atlanta and surrounding areas, creating custom desserts and memorable experiences for celebrations of all kinds. Building this business has allowed me to live out another childhood dream while serving people through creativity and hospitality.
When I reflect on my journey, I see God’s hand in every chapter. From a little girl in Phoenix who dreamed of being a chef, to a young athlete who dreamed of Tennessee, to becoming an Olympian, speaker, coach, and entrepreneur, none of it happened exactly the way I planned. But it unfolded exactly the way it was supposed to.
Whether I’m standing on a stage speaking to a corporate audience, encouraging students to believe in themselves, coaching someone through a challenge, or creating something special through Taste of Gold Bakery, my goal is the same: help people recognize their potential, find purpose in their struggles, and understand that some of life’s greatest blessings are often hidden inside life’s biggest obstacles.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. In fact, my entire speaking career is built on the idea that failure, loss, and disappointment are often the very things that create success.
One of my core philosophies is that failure is necessary. Without failure and loss, you don’t learn what you need to know to win. Failure gives you feedback. It teaches you. It reveals weaknesses, exposes blind spots, and ultimately provides the blueprint for success. It’s such a powerful concept that I’ve turned it into a tangible framework that I teach in my keynote presentations and coaching programs today.
As an athlete, my journey was filled with hurdles. People often see the Olympic medals, championships, and accomplishments, but they don’t see the struggles behind them. One of the biggest challenges I faced was a serious knee injury that required surgery. At the time, I was told there was roughly a 90% chance I would never return to competing at the level I had before. That was a defining moment in my life. I had a choice: accept the odds or fight for a different outcome. By God’s grace, I was able to come back, continue competing, and achieve some of the greatest accomplishments of my career.
The challenges didn’t stop when I retired from sports. Entrepreneurship has brought an entirely different set of obstacles. Like many small business owners, I’ve experienced economic uncertainty, slow seasons, and the pressures that come with building something from the ground up. This year has been particularly challenging, not only from a business standpoint but also personally. I’ve been dealing with chronic hand eczema, which has directly impacted my ability to work and do the things I love.
But if there’s one thing sports taught me, it’s endurance.
When things get difficult, I don’t automatically assume something is wrong. I understand that adversity is part of the process. I lean into my faith, spend time in prayer, and seek God’s guidance for the next step. I trust that difficult seasons are temporary and that there is purpose in the struggle, even when I can’t immediately see it.
When I look back on my life, I can honestly say that many of my greatest accomplishments were born from hardship. I don’t become an Olympic Champion without setbacks. I don’t become an Executive Pastry Chef without challenges. I don’t build a business without obstacles. Every meaningful achievement in my life has required perseverance through difficult circumstances.
As strange as it may sound, I’m grateful for the hardships. They have shaped my character, strengthened my faith, and made me the woman I am today. More importantly, they’ve given me the experience and perspective to help others navigate their own challenges and discover that sometimes the greatest opportunities are hidden inside our greatest struggles.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I wear three hats in my professional life, the Olympic hat, the speaker’s hat, and the chef’s hat. While they may seem very different, they all serve the same purpose, helping people experience excellence and discover what’s possible for themselves.
As a keynote speaker and mental performance coach, I’m probably most known for the energy I bring to the stage. I’ve attended hundreds of events and listened to hundreds of speakers throughout my career, and one thing I’ve learned is that people don’t just remember what you say, they remember how you made them feel, and more importantly, how you made them think about themselves.
I bring a lot of energy, but I also bring vulnerability, transparency, and honesty. I’m willing to talk about the failures, losses, disappointments, and struggles that helped create my success because that’s where the real lessons are. My entire philosophy is built around helping people do one of the simplest yet hardest things in the world, believe in themselves.
Whether I’m speaking to a room full of executives, entrepreneurs, students, or athletes, my goal is always the same. I want people to walk away believing they are more capable than they thought they were. I want them to push past fear, move beyond self doubt, and understand that pressure doesn’t have to break them, it can actually become one of their greatest advantages. That’s the foundation of my work and the message I’m most passionate about sharing.
As the owner of Taste of Gold Bakery, I specialize in custom cakes and dessert tables that are designed to create memorable experiences for our clients. We make everything from scratch and take great pride in our company motto, “Greatness Has a Taste.”
One thing that sets us apart is that we’re committed to both beauty and flavor. In the baking world, you’ll often find products that look amazing but don’t taste great, or products that taste incredible but don’t have the visual impact people are looking for. Our goal is to give our clients both. We want every cake and dessert table to look amazing, taste amazing, and become a centerpiece for life’s special moments.
What I’m most proud of isn’t necessarily the medals, awards, or titles. It’s the fact that I’ve had the courage to pursue multiple dreams throughout my life. I’ve been blessed to compete on the world’s biggest stages, build businesses around my passions, and help other people discover their own potential along the way.
What sets me apart is that everything I teach and everything I create comes from lived experience. Whether it’s competing as an Olympian, building a business, overcoming setbacks, or pursuing a new dream later in life, I’ve learned that greatness isn’t something you’re born with, it’s something you build. That’s the message behind my speaking, my coaching, and even my bakery.
And outside of all those professional titles, I’m also the self proclaimed world’s greatest aunt. I’m blessed with an amazing niece, a wonderful stepdaughter, a fantastic fiancé, and a family that keeps me grounded. At the end of the day, those relationships are what matter most.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I’ve been fortunate to live in a lot of different places throughout my life, including Tokyo, Switzerland, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Knoxville, Tennessee. I’ve also traveled extensively around the world through athletics and speaking. With all of that experience, I can honestly say there’s no place quite like Atlanta.
To me, Atlanta is a cultural mecca. It’s a city filled with creativity, music, energy, opportunity, and innovation. It has a unique spirit that’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it. Whether you’re interested in the arts, entrepreneurship, sports, entertainment, food, nature, or business, Atlanta has something for everyone.
I also appreciate what Atlanta represents for Black excellence. There are so many examples of successful Black entrepreneurs, professionals, creatives, and leaders here. Growing up and building my career in this city helped me see what was possible and gave me examples of people who were achieving at a high level in every industry.
As an Olympian, I also have a deep appreciation for Atlanta’s youth sports culture. The opportunities available to young athletes here are incredible. I’ve seen firsthand how sports can change the trajectory of a person’s life, and Atlanta continues to be a place where young people can develop their talents and create opportunities for themselves through athletics.
I also love that Atlanta continues to evolve. It’s become the Hollywood of the South, attracting talent, creativity, and innovation from all over the world while still maintaining its own identity and culture.
If I had to choose something I like least, it would probably be the feeling of safety in certain areas. Having lived in places like Zürich, Switzerland, which is widely considered one of the safest cities in the world, I have a unique perspective and a strong point of comparison. There are times in Atlanta where it feels like you have to be more aware of your surroundings than you would in some other places I’ve lived. While no city is perfect, I think creating a stronger sense of safety and community would make an already great city even better.
Overall, Atlanta has played a major role in shaping who I am. It’s the city where I discovered sports, built my career, launched businesses, and created a life that I love. For that, it will always hold a special place in my heart. “Atl Shawty”
