Today we’d like to introduce you to EbbTheCeleb.
Hi EbbTheCeleb, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since a young age, I’ve been enamored with music. I always felt like music understood and validated all the different sides of my being. I’ve always been interested in the arts: film, fashion, music, photography, etc. but I never intended to have a career in it. I went to a Kendrick Lamar concert with my friend Jordan in 2017 for the DAMN tour. Changed my life. That concert inspired me so much so that I went home and told my parents I wanted to drop out of college (I was in college for Mechanical Engineering at the time). They said absolutely not but this made me realize that I wanted to work around music in some form or fashion. In 2021 I started a podcast with my best friend titled “Black Fluidity” and that is when I started making beats for the show on my little Akai MPK Mini. That prompted me to buy a Dj board as well. I attempted to Dj in 2021 and I was horrible. I gave up on it. September 2024, I was at an event and an older man was djing and he was trash. I thought to myself “I can do that”. I went home, started practicing, watched videos and started posting content. Its been up ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been smooth, only because I came in with no expectations. When I started DJing, I wanted to dj for myself and learn a new skill. I never intended to Dj for the public. My subconscious struggle is being a darkskin, plus-size woman in the entertainment world. There are not a lot of women in the Dj world that look like me. It can be scary and unwelcoming at times but I have to remain confident and understand that I deserve to be in these spaces as much as anyone else does. My most recent struggle is exposure. I just moved from Birmingham, AL to Atlanta, GA which means I’m new, unknown and I have to get my name out there.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
By day I am engineer. I graduated from The University of Alabama with my BA in Mechanical Engineering. I am a hugeeeeeee nerd. I do math for fun. I love math and science. I love school, always have. Primarily I was semi known for being a regular plus size woman posting fit pictures and videos, podcast content, gym content, etc. I’ve always been body positive and my goal has always been to make other people become more comfortable in their bodies. Most recently I’m known for being a Dj and a music connoisseur. I’m most proud of my baby, my first curated event “ETC Session”. ETC Session is a double entendre, “EbTheCeleb Session” or “etcetera session” meaning so on and so forth! A monthly event I curated intended to bring new genres/vibes to the audience every month. I was tired of going out and hearing the same music so I created an event that allows me to play whatever I want to a crowd that I encourage to be open minded. I feel like what sets me apart is authenticity and the fact that I lack the urge to be cliche and go viral. A lot of Dj content makes me cringe but maybe I’m just weird. In today’s world everyone has this strong desire to go viral and constantly get those “wow” moments from the crowd. I’m just here to play my music, put people on to new music/sounds and connect with people through the actual musicccc.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Learn how to Dj, not how to go viral and appease the audience. Learn the basics. Learn how to blend, how to transition, how to count, how to engage the crowd without mashups/edits, how to read a crowd, how to scratch, how to manually beat sync. Learn the full functionality of your board. Learn how to COUNT. That sounds weird and simple but once you start, you will understand why counting is so important. Be authentic to yourself always. Play what you want to hear while also playing what the crowd wants. Record everything you do, audio and video. Post the content. The only thing I wish I knew was how Djing changes the way you listen to music. It’s hard to explain but I cannot listen to music as I use to prior to becoming a Dj. I dont quite listen to music for enjoyment anymore. My brain automatically things “How can I incorporate this into a dj set?”.
