Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Monét.
Hi Evan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for media started long before TheeKatchUp. In college, I had the opportunity to work in radio, which gave me hands-on experience in interviewing, content creation, and connecting with audiences. That experience confirmed that storytelling was what I wanted to do. From there, I built a career in social media, graphic design, branding, and digital marketing, helping organizations and businesses tell their stories while sharpening my own creative voice.
As I gained more experience, I realized there were so many talented artists, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and creatives who weren’t getting the recognition they deserved. That inspired me to launch TheeKatchUp. I wanted to create a platform that felt authentic, celebrated culture, and gave people a space to share their stories.
Since launching, TheeKatchUp has covered major events, interviewed nationally recognized artists, and become a trusted platform for highlighting the people and moments shaping our community. We’re still growing, but my mission has always been the same: tell meaningful stories, amplify voices, and make sure great people get the spotlight they deserve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Like most people building something from the ground up, I’ve had to figure a lot of things out as I go. There have been moments where I’ve questioned myself, dealt with setbacks, or had to adapt on the spot.
One moment that always stands out is interviewing Mannie Fresh. It was a huge opportunity, but my microphones failed during the interview. As frustrating as that was, it taught me that things won’t always go as planned, and being able to stay calm, pivot, and keep moving is just as important as being prepared.
On a more personal level, losing my dad changed the way I approach life and my work. It gave me a deeper appreciation for time, relationships, and creating something that has a lasting impact. There have been moments where balancing grief, a full-time career, graduate school, and building TheeKatchUp felt overwhelming, but those experiences have also made me more resilient.
The journey definitely hasn’t been perfect, but every challenge has helped shape the platform and the person behind it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a multimedia journalist, content creator, and digital strategist, but my journey actually started in graphic design. For years, I was known primarily as a graphic designer, creating branding and marketing materials for businesses, events, and organizations. While I loved the creative side of design, I eventually realized my passion extended beyond making content—I wanted to be the person telling the stories behind it.
That transition led me to create TheeKatchUp, where I combine my background in design, branding, social media, and journalism to spotlight artists, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and culture. Today, I specialize in interviews, event coverage, and digital storytelling that helps people and brands connect with their audiences in an authentic way.
What I’m most proud of is successfully evolving my career. I took a leap from being known as “the graphic designer” to building a media platform that’s earned opportunities to interview artists I grew up listening to, cover major events, and shine a light on local talent. I think what sets me apart is that I genuinely care about the people behind every story. Whether I’m interviewing a nationally recognized artist or someone launching their first business, I approach every conversation with the same curiosity, preparation, and respect.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is authenticity. I never want someone to leave an interview feeling like they had to put on a show or that their story was changed just to get more views. To me, the best conversations happen when people feel comfortable enough to just be themselves.
That’s a big part of why I created the Pass the Mic series. I wanted people who would never normally have the chance to interview someone, or even be part of the media world—to experience it, even if it’s only for five minutes. Some of my favorite moments have come from watching someone grab the mic for the first time and realize they belong in the conversation too.
At the end of the day, I want TheeKatchUp to be known for telling stories the right way. If someone trusts me enough to share a piece of their life or their journey, I want to honor that. The views and numbers are great, but they’ll never matter more than making sure people feel seen, respected, and represented honestly.
