Check Out Lex Drayton’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lex Drayton.

Hi Lex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up with a passion for creativity and always believed my future would be in art and design. That passion led me to earn my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Georgia State University, with additional coursework at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). After graduating, I began my career as an Interior Design Consultant while also building my own creative business as a fine artist. Creativity taught me how to pay attention to detail, solve problems, and create experiences that positively impact people’s lives.

In 2022, my life changed in a way I never expected. My father suffered a pulmonary aneurysm that required emergency open-heart surgery, and during his recovery he endured seven strokes. Watching him fight for his life while witnessing the compassion, professionalism, and technical expertise of the healthcare team caring for him completely reshaped my understanding of purpose. Their care inspired me to pursue a career in Radiologic Technology so that one day I can provide patients and families with the same reassurance and compassion that meant so much to mine.

Life continued to test me. I supported my family through additional health challenges, including my father’s later hospitalization for blood clots and my mother’s own health concerns. I also walked alongside my grandmother during her courageous battle with Stage IV breast cancer before saying goodbye to her, while grieving the loss of other loved ones. Those experiences reminded me that tomorrow is never promised and deepened my appreciation for compassion, resilience, and living with intention.

Rather than allowing hardship to define me, I chose to let it refine me.

While navigating grief and uncertainty, I continued working full-time, preparing to enter one of the most demanding healthcare programs, investing in my physical health, and continuing to grow as an artist. Every challenge strengthened my faith and reminded me that purpose often reveals itself through adversity.

Today, I stand at the intersection of creativity and healthcare. My goal is to become a compassionate radiologic technologist who not only provides accurate diagnostic imaging but also helps patients feel seen, respected, and cared for. My story has taught me that success isn’t measured only by accomplishments—it’s measured by how we use our experiences to serve others.

My personal motto is “I Trust God To Completely Evolve Me.” Looking back, I realize my story isn’t about changing careers—it has been about discovering my purpose.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to keep moving forward while life continued to change around me.

Over the past several years, I’ve navigated significant family health challenges, career uncertainty, and the loss of loved ones. Those experiences forced me to confront grief, redefine success, and trust that purpose can emerge even during life’s most difficult seasons.

Professionally, stepping away from a career in design to pursue healthcare wasn’t an easy decision. It meant leaving behind something I had worked hard to build and starting over in an entirely new field. At the same time, I was balancing full-time work, preparing for a rigorous academic program, and remaining committed to my own physical, mental, and spiritual growth.

What carried me through was my faith. My personal motto, “I Trust God To Completely Evolve Me,” became more than words—it became the perspective that helped me embrace change instead of fearing it.

Looking back, I don’t see those seasons as setbacks. They strengthened my resilience, deepened my compassion, and prepared me to serve others with greater empathy. I’ve learned that while we can’t always control what happens to us, we can choose how we respond, and that choice has shaped the person I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about creating experiences that improve people’s lives. I currently work as an Interior Design Consultant with Havertys, where I help clients transform their houses into homes that reflect who they are and how they want to live. Outside of design, I’m also a fine artist specializing in highly detailed graphite portrait drawings that celebrate meaningful people, relationships, and milestones.

My background in fine art, visual graphite portrait drawing, and interior design has taught me to pay close attention to detail, think creatively, communicate effectively, and build meaningful relationships with people from all walks of life. Every project is personal to me because no two clients are the same. I enjoy listening to their stories, understanding their vision, and creating something that feels uniquely theirs.

People often ask what inspires my work. My clients think they’re inspired by me, but the truth is, I’m inspired by each of them. My passion is our collaboration. Whether I’m designing a room or creating a portrait, the most rewarding part is working together to create something meaningful that reflects their story and leaves a lasting impact.

What I’m most proud of isn’t one project—it’s having the courage to continue evolving. After earning my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Georgia State University and building a career in design, my family’s experiences with healthcare inspired me to pursue a new calling in Radiologic Technology. While my career path is evolving, my purpose has remained the same: using my gifts to serve others with compassion, creativity, and care.

I think what sets me apart is that I’ve never viewed my work as simply completing a task. Whether I’m designing a home, creating a portrait, or preparing for a career in healthcare, my goal is always the same—to make people feel seen, heard, and valued. My personal motto, “I Trust God To Completely Evolve Me,” reminds me that every experience has prepared me for the next chapter.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality that has contributed most to my success is my willingness to keep evolving while remaining authentic to who I am. Every chapter of my life has challenged me to grow, from earning my Bachelor of Fine Arts and building a career in interior design to creating graphite portraits and now pursuing radiologic technology. I’ve learned that growth comes from staying teachable, embracing challenges, and trusting the process.

I believe everyone has their own perspective on what creativity means because we all experience life differently. To me, creativity isn’t about following trends or conforming to what’s been normalized by society. It’s about expressing who you are with integrity and using your unique experiences to create something meaningful.

Success, to me, isn’t just measured by talent or achievements. It’s about consistency, resilience, and having the courage to become a better version of yourself without losing who you are. That’s the mindset I carry into every opportunity, and it’s how I hope to leave a lasting, positive impact on the people I serve.
