Today we’d like to introduce you to Miya Reddrick.
Hi Miya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi! I am Miya Alise, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I am currently a North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University student, majoring in Social Work with a minor in Supply Chain Management. I am a business owner, YouTuber, and desiring philanthropist/influencer. My passions include caring for others, strengthening my relationship with God, and running my cosmetics business, GLIMMER. by Alise, which I started in 2019 with only $20.00! When asked why I started my cosmetics brand, I always smile and share that I could not wear makeup until the age of 16; however, my mother always introduced me to high-quality lip products, such as MAC’s lip gillette and Mary Kay lip gloss. Because I could not wear makeup like my peers, lip gloss was always a source of confidence, which is why I am so passionate about my brand; I want others to feel the glamour and luxury provided by the simple things in life!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My road to success has not always been easy; however, I strive to use my pain as an opportunity to find my purpose and encourage others. One of my most life-changing experiences happened in October of 2020 after being diagnosed with HSV-1, also known as the Herpes virus. Alongside my long-time battle with depression/anxiety, I have also had many experiences that challenged my self-worth and self-concept. Dealing with rejection has been an ongoing battle, along with feelings of inadequacy, shame, and embarrassment; however, God has constantly reminded me of the power I hold. Utilizing my YouTube channel has been an excellent way for me to track my healing process while also sharing my story with others giving them the ability to see hope in their situations through my testimonies. I am thankful for the barriers I have encountered throughout my journey, as I firmly believe that we do not go through things for ourselves but for others to know they are not alone. I find my strength and purpose in my pain and the ability to overcome the many challenging roadblocks essential for my development.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a YouTuber and the brand owner of GLIMMER. by Alise cosmetics, a vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics line! Diving into my cosmetics brand first, GLIMMER. by Alise’s mission is to embolden individuals to push their authenticity beyond their perceived limits. Leaping out on faith, I promised myself that I was going to start a brand that would focus on individuality, empowering, and enlightening the world around me. Behind the creation of GLIMMER. by Alise is the hope that all will be inspired to embrace others in their communities while also embracing themselves.
Secondly, my YouTube channel is my primary platform where I share my truths about my life experiences, primarily involving my positive herpes status. In recent months, I’ve started a series called #HOTTIES with Herpes, where I discuss how to regain confidence in the dating world, how to disclose one’s STD status, and stigma-breaking facts. The purpose of #HOTTIES with Herpes is to shine a positive light on the beauty life still holds even when carrying HSV 1/2. I want every woman who comes across my channel to remember that they are still THAT GIRL! Since starting my channel, I have also created the #HOTTIES Hotline, which gives women the opportunity to book free coaching calls! These calls are designed for anyone seeking advice or needing to talk through their herpes-related traumas. I have had many women reach out to me for advice, encouragement, and to say thanks for the fact that they now feel less alone in their journeys. I, too, am reminded that I am not alone and that everything I have experienced means something more.
I have always been known for speaking my truth and creating my own path in life. My parents always reminded me that I would always move to the beat of my drum at a young age. Some of the very character traits that they once found “challenging” or “disrespectful” are the same ones they are now super proud of, as I have found my voice and continue to use it to bring about positive awareness and change.
I am most proud of my ability to speak my truth and put the opinions of others so far behind me that I am an open book regarding my life. Of course, I have not always been so confident, but through the years, I’ve realized that the moments I was accepted and embraced the most were when I was not afraid to admit my flaws.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 pandemic taught me a lot, but one of my most valuable takeaways is always to be patient with myself. More than ever, I believe the pandemic taught the world the value of doing the best we can and how essential it is to accept ourselves even when it’s hard. The pandemic opened my eyes to the importance of going at my own pace and reminded me not to allow the world to determine my path!
