Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Simmone.
Hi Nia Simmone, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised from Atlanta, Georgia I grew up inspired by my community and family. Growing up in the south played a large part in my love for fashion and culture given the lack of representation in the media of bigger bodies. I saw people that looked like me and were able to express themselves fully and I wanted to give people that same fulfilled feeling. This prompted my thirst to continue. I followed fashion blogs, studied fashion shows, and researched the culture architects while beginning my career working in retail at Marshall’s then Nordstrom. I began to build the foundation of my career while growing my love and knowledge for fashion. While at Nordstrom I worked in MANY departments but the one that stole my heart was Studio Services. I ran a business that partnered with costume designers, stylists and creatives from the film and television industry. I wrote fashion pieces for online blogs, lead styling seminars and began styling virtually. During the pandemic, I made the transition to the film and television industry as a Costumer and have had the opportunity of growing my personal brand while working on major projects from Dynasty, The Wonder Years and Beauty in Black.
Currently, I am costumer and a stylist with hopes of continuing to build my brand BIGGER. I was put on this earth to make people feel good, showcase who they are, and to tell stories their through clothes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road that I have traveled has been the most interesting to say the least. I went through hardships as a child that made me self aware, adaptable and prepared for the world. These skills gave me inspiration to not allow me to get stuck; I knew I was destined for greater. My motivation for a career in fashion started because I saw very little representation of curves in media. I had even smaller references of people that looked like me holding positions behind the scenes of the fashion industry. I had to become my own it girl!
My goal has always been to make EVERYONE feel good and put themselves on their own mood board. I had the biggest career shift while the world was shifting culturally from COVID. The pandemic shifted my thought process many times. How could I connect people to clothing during a time where we couldn’t even connect to people? People were disconnected from each other and clothes became uniform. This ignited my fire, and I poured my heart, soul and time into the career and myself. I am just getting started!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My speciality is connection. As a huge fan of music, film, and culture, these forms of story telling have allowed me to connect to others through fashion. I am a Costumer and Stylist. Each day looks different from each other but the common thing is telling stories through clothes. As a costumer, I take the vision from the costumer designer and aid them in bringing that vision to life. I assist in the day to day maintenance of clothes, assist cast in dressing, and maintain continuity of items. Similar practices as a stylist, but instead of interpreting a script, I break down who the person is and want they want to showcase and bring that to life.
I begin on what we want to accomplish. From occasion dressing, to street style I pivot on what each client needs; I connect with them and bring their personalties to life in garments. Being creative and making people look their best fuels me. Fashion is meant to be discussed, shared and celebrated.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Various different sources from everyday life have aided my skills and sparked my thirst of love for fashion. My main resource or creative inspiration include stylists like Law Roach, Kollin Carter, Wayman+ Micah and Shiona Turini. The innovation and collaborative work they have done with their clients has been the most motivating aspects that inspired my journey.
