Check Out Robyn Groenewald’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Groenewald.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After a long career in Market Research and then having my kids I wanted to make a change. I’d always loved baking and I wanted to do something where I could be flexible and work from home. I also love being creative. It grew very slowly, I was worried that it would stop being fun when I started taking orders. I was wrong, I still get excited about creating and trying something new. I really love what I do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Figuring out my own style, I think most bakers when you haven’t yet established your own style and are mostly making cakes for kids birthdays will be asked to copy someone else’s style or creation. Breaking out of that cycle took some effort and courage. Having confidence in yourself and your own ideas takes some time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create custom cakes and cupcakes. I specialize in buttercream flowers. I hand pipe buttercream to look like flowers. So you can eat the flowers on your cake or have a bouquet of cupcakes that look like a bouquet of flowers.
I ask my customers to share their vision colors inspo pics or image boards with me and partner with them to create something unique for their function.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Watching my mom being creative. She also decorated cakes when I was little. I would sit and watch her pipe these delicate royal icing patterns. I also remember watching her paint. She made me believe I could do it too.
