Today we’d like to introduce you to Salin “Fon” Limsomwong.
Hi Salin “Fon”, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Ever since I was a child in Bangkok, Thailand, I have always liked drawing. I started off drawing comics featuring my family dogs with my classmates on the inner cover of my notebooks during elementary school. Since then, I have come to realize that art is my passion, and I decided to pursue higher education at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Savannah starting in Fall 2018 with a major in Illustration.
In 2019, I decided to transfer to the formerly existing SCAD Hong Kong because it was closer to home both geographically and culturally. I only had the chance to stay in Hong Kong for six months before it shut down permanently. After that, I decided to take a gap year and do internships back at home. In Bangkok, I interned at a publication design firm, and I quickly learned about the joy of graphic design. With graphic design, your message could reach so many people at once. To me, that sense of communication gives me the purpose to continue creating.
Currently, I am pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design with minors in Art History and Motion Media Design at SCAD Atlanta. While it is unfortunate with what happened to SCAD Hong Kong, I am very grateful to be here in Atlanta, learning about how to create designs that are meaningful!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it definitely has not been. Between 2019 and 2020, I was struggling very much with a loss in passion. I was thinking to myself a lot about how I was not worthy of pursuing a career in Illustration because I was not drawing as much as my fellow classmates. I did not like the idea of creating a “style” of off my own art (even though I clearly had a preference). It was a depressing time. I lost all joy in creating art. I am grateful that I had the time to think and reflect after the Hong Kong campus closed down because I came to learn that graphic design suited me much more. Now my goal is to incorporate my knowledge in illustration into graphic design as much as possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in digital illustrations. My style can be described as colorful and cartoony. They are easy to understand. As of currently, I try to incorporate graphic design and animation into my works so most of my illustrations were animated.
I feel proud whenever I see my work in action! Whenever something is printed or published online, it gives me a sense of proudness that could never be replaced by anything else.
As creatives, we are all special in our own way. I have a friend that often tells me I’m an “eclectic” person. I take that as a compliment. I do have a very various tastes in everything, and I try to immerse myself into every aspect of art, such as fashion and music, in order to learn and implement parts of them in my own designs. Currently, my interest lies in sustainability and User Experience design. I just landed an internship for User Experience in Thailand this upcoming Summer. I look forward very much to learning more about the psychological aspect of communication design!
What were you like growing up?
As a kid, I was very shy. I went to an all-girls school, so I was very proper. Interest-wise, I liked reading manga and playing with dogs. I don’t think that part of me changed at all.
