Check Out Sonya Riviere’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Riviere

Hi Sonya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a young hairstylist in 2015, I realized I wanted more control over my earnings, and the best way to do that was through independence. In 2016, I officially launched Sonya Riviere llc and teamed up with my business mentor at the time, Danina Nicole Makeup Artistry. Together, we booked bridal parties and events, with Danina on makeup and myself doing hair. I always encourage collaboration with others in your field — it’s a great way to exchange ideas, grow your network, and bring in more business.

While I was focused on bridal work, I remained curious and open to other opportunities. That mindset led me print work, commercials, theatre and then landed a position at WSB-TV, where I went through extensive makeup bootcamp under the Hair and Makeup Supervisor, Tymeka McNeil. That opportunity introduced me to the world of television and film. From there, my network expanded. I eventually transitioned to working in film full-time and became a proud Local 798 Union Member.

Even with these achievements, my journey doesn’t stop here. The film industry can be unpredictable, and I’ve always believed in having multiple streams of income while maintaining my creative freedom. Now, I’m excited to launch my online hair extension store (www.srivierehair.com), offering 100% Raw, Unprocessed South Indian Single Donor Hair — the highest quality hair on the market with ethical sourcing practices. My goal is not only to sell hair but also to educate people on the benefits of investing in premium hair extensions that truly last.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I embrace every challenge because that’s where the growth happens. As a freelance artist, one of the biggest struggles is the uncertainty- you don’t always know where your next paycheck is coming from. You have to create your own opportunities, stay driven, and be diligent. It takes a lot of hustle, but honestly I love it- the grind keeps me motivated and always pushes me to the next level.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a freelance hairstylist specializing in styling all textures of hair. While styling is my main focus, I also have a passion for precision hair cutting, creating machine-made wigs, and custom hairpieces.

What I’m most proud of is how I constantly challenge myself to improve and learn more about my craft. Whether it’s mastering new techniques or educating myself on the latest trends and products, I believe there’s always room to grow.

What sets me apart is my versatility. My clientele is diverse, and I take pride in my ability to style all hair textures with confidence. Being able to make every client feel beautiful, no matter their hair type, is truly rewarding.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
COVID taught me some valuable life lessons. One of the biggest takeaways was to never give into fear — always do your own research, trust your intuition, and take control of your own health. It made me more mindful of what I put into my body and how important it is to prioritize wellness — mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Another eye-opening lesson was witnessing how divided people became, especially toward those who simply had questions or different opinions. It showed me how important it is to always lead with love, kindness, and respect, even when others’ views don’t align with your own.

Above all, the pandemic reminded me how crucial it is to have multiple streams of income and the freedom to be your own boss. That mindset is what pushed me to start my online hair business and continue creating my own opportunities.
