Today we’d like to introduce you to Trinh Bui.
Trinh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the true embodiment of my multi-cultural upbringing and my passion for the creative arts.
I am Vietnamese American but was born in Thailand and in my formative years was raised and educated in Taiwan, the Philippines, and Vietnam. My family relocated back to our Atlanta base in 2008, and we’ve been here since. During my time abroad transitioning to permanently residing in America, I was in the early stages of harvesting and honing what it means to be a multi-faceted artist. My dedication to being creative was the root of every important decision made toward my education and career. I attended North Springs High School’s Dual Magnet Program, concentrating on Math & Science + Visual & Performing Arts. I’m proud to have recently graduated from Georgia Tech (highest honor) with a major in Literature, Media, and Communication, minoring in Leadership Studies.
I can’t say it enough, I live and breathe the arts. I love artistic expression through a variety of mediums and through performance, the whole package. It began with typical ballet, piano, and art classes as a child. This has evolved into a passion for filmmaking (short features & animation), the digital arts (designing, producing, & selling pop-culture merchandise), and dance choreography (hip-hop & cultural). I also love the process of creating. The required mix of skills – from creative conceptualization through disciplined project planning and management through effective team selection, instruction, and execution – are diverse. Each project/ journey is challenging and very often exhilarating.
I’m definitely not short on ambition. I hope to be able to make my mark and continue to be an avid learner. Through the belief that it is vital to have working knowledge of your craft and be adaptable to multiple aesthetics, I strive to be an artist who can effectively tell a variety of stories and make an impact in this world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Very few roads that are worth taking will be smooth and easy. Mine certainly has not been and will not be. Being multicultural lends itself to having diverse social experiences. But it also means that I am usually an outsider looking in. It can’t be ignored that my chosen career path is far from straight and narrow.
The struggles are real and constant, both external – intense competition, the nature of the creative industry – and internal – many self-doubts, comparisons, and insecurities. These struggles intensified my competitiveness and challenged my dedication to continue, to say the least. Luckily, I have a strong support system (family, colleagues, & mentors) and backbone to fuel my drive to make and achieve my drastic ambitions.
What I continue to learn and remind myself, is that no one’s pathway is linear and that comparison is a thief of joy.
I am grateful that I have my ambition, determination, and work ethic that has been instilled in me to carry me through.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a filmmaker, content creator, and digital artist. At this early point in my career, I’ve been lucky to have some successes. My work in short feature films has won awards at festivals. My animation portfolio is building up nicely. The digital arts business I started a few years ago is gaining some traction (selling at multiple K-pop cafe events, Atlanta Comic Con 2021, & Atlanta Streetwear Market 2022). I’ve also had productive experiences working on brand/social media marketing projects with several organizations (Cultural arts such as Afrofuturism & Social non-profits). It feels like I’m always most proud of my latest work – whatever that might be. I try to incorporate my latest learnings, observations, fascinations, and technical development such that my most recent projects will be the most innovative and robust.
One big thing that sets me apart from others is that I tend to be ‘all-in’ on my selected projects. ‘All-in’ means I take full accountability for driving the project to its proper conclusion. This means I usually evolve into the project leader. It means I tend to wear multiple hats. On a film project, I am the writer, director, and editor. On business ventures, I source materials, create products, market them, and sell them. I do what’s needed to get the project done on time, on budget, on quality, and on objectives. I’m a bit maniacal about this, but I do it in a nice way (really!! haha).
If you ever need someone to fulfill and produce your vision, whether it is a short film, music video, dance, greeting card, stylistic portrait, or merchandise. I am definitely the person you can fully trust! Plus, I give multiple well-thought-out options (if time allows)!
What matters most to you?
In general, authenticity matters to me. I was taught to appreciate the many different cultures that we have in the world. Each culture has its own characteristics and norms. We should try to recognize, understand, appreciate, and celebrate the uniqueness of each.
Commitment matters to me. This means you can count on me, and I can count on you – especially when the going gets tough.
Having a positive impact matters to me. Whether short-term or long-term. As someone who’s an active observer of people and who’s had a set of experiences of feeling like an outsider, I hope people learn something new, feel better about themselves, or feel represented after having experienced my work.
Creating art continues to fuel my happiness and it is not just a form of escapism. Art, in its multiple forms, continues to brighten everyone’s spirits, and I want to continue doing so.
