Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Johnson.
Hi Crystal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Jackson, Mississippi, and I’ve always had a strong interest in science—particularly in healthcare. My curiosity about dentistry began in middle school after a visit to the orthodontist-it opened my eyes to a profession that perfectly blended science, creativity, and service.
As an undergraduate student at Tougaloo College, I was fortunate to participate in summer research programs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and to shadow local dentists in my community. Those experiences confirmed that dentistry was the right career path for me. I graduated from Tougaloo College in 2005 and went on to earn my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 2009.
Over the years, my fascination with how oral health impacts overall wellness has only deepened. I made a commitment early on to serve my community and provide quality, compassionate care. That commitment led me to launch Johnson Family Dentistry in Powder Springs, Georgia, in 2011. Since opening, I’ve built the practice on faith, grit, and a commitment to excellence.
I’ve always believed dentistry offers the best of both worlds—helping people while creating something beautiful and lasting. It’s such a broad and evolving field, and there’s always something new to learn. I truly feel that I’m one of the lucky few whose career is also their passion—no day ever feels like “work.” I love crafting and creating smiles, solving problems, and strategizing about what’s next in my professional journey.
I’ve always been a leader who welcomes challenges, so it was no surprise when I decided to open my own practice- while balancing life as a wife with a new baby. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch my four-operatory practice, which began with just two rooms built out, grow into a thriving nine-operatory office supported by an amazing team of eleven people. I’m profoundly grateful for the unwavering love and support of my husband, children, and parents, who have stood behind every idea and milestone. None of this would have been possible without them.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wish I could say everything along my career path has been smooth and fallen perfectly into place—yet the reality is that growth often comes through challenges. I have learned that every obstacle has strengthened my resolve and refined my purpose. I rely heavily on my faith and core principles to stay grounded and to guide me through both challenges and successes.
Starting a practice was no easy feat. From choosing the right location, designing the look and feel of the office, and learning how to actually manage a business, to hiring the right team members—it’s all been a continuous learning process.
Right before the COVID shutdown, I decided to expand my office from four to nine operatories. That decision brought its own set of challenges, including supply shortages, increased costs, contractor delays, and constant scheduling adjustments. Despite the obstacles, everything eventually came together.
We successfully introduced our newly expanded and updated practice to both existing and new patients—all while navigating the unique challenges of keeping everyone safe during COVID. Looking back, those experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of faith and perseverance.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the founder of Johnson Family Dentistry in Powder Springs, Georgia, which I opened in 2011 with a vision to provide high-quality, patient-centered dental care in a warm and welcoming environment. Our practice offers comprehensive general and family dentistry, including preventive care, restorative treatments, cosmetic dentistry, and more.
What sets us apart is our commitment to creating a truly personalized experience for every patient. We focus on understanding each patient’s goals and concerns, and we take the time to educate and guide them so they can make informed decisions about their oral health. From the moment patients walk through our doors, we aim to make them feel comfortable, cared for, and confident in the care they receive.
I am most proud of the culture we’ve built- one grounded in faith, integrity, and excellence. Over the years, we’ve grown from a four-operatory office to a nine-operatory practice with an incredible team of caring and dedicated professionals. This growth reflects not only our success but also our commitment to the community we serve.
For readers, I want them to know that at Johnson Family Dentistry, we are passionate about helping patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles while providing an experience that is as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Our mission is to combine clinical excellence with compassion, innovation, and a personal touch that keeps patients coming back and feeling like part of our dental family.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
That’s such a great question—and honestly, a tough one—because dentistry is constantly evolving, and always for the better. There’s a continual push among my colleagues to enhance patient care, comfort, and overall experience.
Over the next decade, I believe we’ll see even greater integration of technology into everyday practice. More dental providers will adopt tools like artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and in-office milling to streamline workflows, increase efficiency, and offer same-day solutions for patients. These innovations have already made their way into many practices, and I expect them to become standard in the near future.
Ultimately, the focus will continue shifting toward a more personalized, technology-driven, and patient-centered approach to care—making dentistry more precise, accessible, and convenient than ever before.
