Today we’d like to introduce you to Evyn Barron.
Hi Evyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Rhude House started back in college at KSU when Owen Westphal and I (Evyn Barron) met in our school’s film club “For Film’s Sake.”
At the time, the school did not provide any useful film equipment so we did the next best thing: we started buying our own film equipment using misappropriated scholarship funds! Our journey into becoming a rental house began with a couple LED lights ordered from Amazon, free light stands from shutdown studios, and Home Depot extension cables from our parents’ garages. In our time at our school’s film club, we helped produce and provide gear to over 20 short films. Little by little over the course of 3 years, we slowly added gear to our list and suddenly our parents’ garages weren’t big enough to hold everything.
In August 2023, we created a partnership LLC between the two of us (mainly for a tax write off on the film gear we couldn’t stop buying) with a placeholder name “Rhude House.” And in January 2024, we went all in and bought our first trailer. This allowed us to both store the gear and transport it to set, and by working out of a trailer it greatly improved our efficiency. This was a huge leap from having to load and unload three separate SUVs full of gear every time we needed to shoot.
Ever since then, we’ve been constantly upgrading our trailer package, helping us grow into larger professional productions and allowing us to create our own films while still sticking to our roots and supporting student filmmakers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a film rental business comes with its expected challenges: constantly having to maintain equipment, keeping up with the latest tech, replacing broken gear, chasing overdue invoices, travelling, etc. But no one warns you about the amount of time you need to sacrifice if you have a business.
Balancing time with running a rental business with our personal brands has been a challenge since leaving college. Owen and I hope to forge our own paths in the film industry; Owen wants to continue as a DP eventually working on big budget sci-fi feature films, and I want to be a director creating my own films.
Rhude House as a rental company is only a stepping stone to what we want to achieve. Down the road, we envision Rhude House becoming a full fledged production company with a studio and cool coffee mugs with our Ü logo on them. In the meantime, we’ll try our best to provide filmmakers with the tools we never had to create the things we were never able to make.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rhude House?
Rhude House is an Atlanta-based film gear rental house that can provide production services and crew to support any low to mid-size video production at competitive prices. Our bread and butter is our 1-Ton Grip & Electric Trailer. It comes with a huge assortment of lights, stands, frames, and flags to light anything from a small corporate video to an indie feature film. Along with that, we have various camera packages including the Sony Venice, Sony FX6, and Sony FX3 and all the accessories you could need. Shoot us a call, text, email, messenger pigeon and we try our best to accommodate your budget and help you every step of the process (our logo is a smiley Ü for a reason).
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I learned is that there is not a clear path laid for you. Neither of us went into college wanting or even thinking about starting a business. Rhude House came out of passion and birthed from our need to create but not having tools to do so. We don’t know what the future holds, but all we know is that the film is still alive in Atlanta, and we hope to support it as long as we can.
