Today we’d like to introduce you to Janai Iman.
Hi Janai, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started The Skin Haus after I graduated from esthetics school in 2021. I grew up as a theater kid so that sparked my interest in makeup and the beauty of transformation from an early age.
I was always involved in the beauty industry doing makeup and hair but I never really took it serious until I decided to go to school and fell in love with all things esthetics.
I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone and I wanted the freedom to showcase my talent the way I wanted. From there, The Skin Haus was born. I officially opened my doors in September 2021 and haven’t looked back!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! I have struggled in more ways than many people can imagine but I’ve learned to fall in love with the process. Not everyone has the opportunity to be their own boss or start a business so I am thankful for that. There are many things I didn’t know about the business before I started. I definitely didn’t realize just how much effort went into being an owner who provides a service. But like I said, I have learned to enjoy every moment of this journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Skin Haus is a private beauty spa that offers eyebrow, facial, makeup, and waxing services.
I specialize in and am known for my eyebrow transformations. They are definitely my most popular service.
I think what sets me apart from others is my transparency with my clients and the way I make them feel. I have always wanted to curate a place where everyone could feel like their best self. I want them to look in the mirror and love the reflection they see. If I can create that sort of safe space for you, then I have done exactly what I was meant to do!
I think I am most proud of my ability to stay true to myself and who I am even through my brand. My brand represents a softer, more delicate side of me as a person. So I am glad I get to share that with my clients and allow them a moment to feel that within themselves.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is probably putting on talent shows with my baby brother for my parents. We would spend hours coming up with a skit, a song or dance, coordinate outfits and perform for my parents when they came home from work. I’m sure they were terrible but my brother is my best friend, so those silly memories with him always mean the most to me.
