Community Highlights: Meet Jerrell Johnson of Nijsha Enterprise

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerrell Johnson.

Hi Jerrell, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was working for a contract manufacturer. At that time, I was a single parent raising my three children. The company went out of business. Owing me also 30k in commissions and never paid me. The owner kept saying he was going to pay me and never did. My bills were backing up and that’s when I decided to write my business plan and go into business for myself. I called all the customers and informed them that I was going to be opening my own business and I asked them to give me a shot at working on their RFQ’s. That was in 2006 and I have been in business ever since then. I decided that I wanted to work with the Military, Commercial, Transportation, Medical Industry and OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufactures). I started doing various trade shows and exhibiting in different states. I knew if I wanted to become a leader in my industry that I would have to obtain certain certifications to leverage myself in my field. I applied for my SDB, MBE, AS9100 and my Hub Zone Certification and joined with the SBA.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. It requires a lot of cold calling, emailing and marketing. Targeting customers who I want to do work with which is always an ongoing effort. Some of the struggles are being priced competitive against my competitors. To keep knocking on customer doors looking for opportunities which can be challenging at times.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Nijsha Enterprise is a contract manufacturer of custom cables, wire harnesses, electro mechanical assemblies, pcb assemblies and a distributor of electronic components. Nijsha does reverse engineering and has an excellent research department for those hard to find obsolete items. Our reverse engineering sets us apart from others. Nijsha has achieved many Government & Commercial awards. We have been Endorsed by the TV mogul Kevin Harrington from the Hit TV Series “Shark Tank” and was Interviewed by him. The interview was aired on FOX TV nationally. We have been in various publications such as FOX, CBS & NBC. We are looking to expand our customer base and looking to become even more successful and get more contract awards from other Industries and companies globally. Nijsha Enterprise President Jerrell Johnson Jr. has written his book titled “How to secure Government Contracts” which will be available soon. Jerrell truly wants to inspire others to start their own business and conducts speaking engagements. & mentorship. I believe in being a strong leader to our community and nation.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
We have taken a risk on getting our AS9100 which is very costly, This was very needed this so that we can get more contracts. Some companies are not AS9100 certified or even ISO. I believe that you have to take certain risks if you want to become successful. I put my faith and trust in God, who always leads and guides me.
