Today we’d like to introduce you to LaNae Combs Wilkins.
LaNae , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
There are two things I’ve always known I wanted to do: cook and help people. The cooking part was easy to figure out, but the “helping” piece took me on a much more winding—and surprising—journey.
I actually went to school for journalism, which is funny because it has nothing to do with what I’m doing now. While in undergrad, I fell in love with a healthcare advocacy group, and one of my friends shared more about her own path toward social work. I thought about changing my major, but it would’ve added two years, and I knew that wasn’t the right move for me at the time. So, I graduated with a degree in art.
After graduation, I planned to go to culinary school—until life threw me a curveball. I found out I was pregnant. I knew that being a chef would mean working breakfast, lunch, and dinner shifts, and I didn’t want to give up that time as a new mom. So, I pivoted. I decided to pursue a master’s degree in social work instead.
At first, I wanted to be a hospital social worker, but when I started at the University of Southern California, they removed the medical program and placed me at a behavioral health hospital for my internship. And honestly—I loved it. Watching clients move from a place of dissatisfaction to rediscovering happiness was powerful. I especially connected with teens, and being part of changing the trajectory of their lives felt like such a gift.
But that first love—cooking—never really left me. In 2020, during the pandemic, I decided to revisit it. I quickly realized that cooking full-time took too much away from my family, so I shifted my focus to baking. What started as specialty cupcakes turned into elaborate cakes, wedding creations, and even treat tables. I taught myself how to do it all.
Now, I’m in a place I never could have fully imagined back then: I co-own a private therapy practice with my business partner and friend, Marius Haynes, LPC, and I also run my own home-based baking business. At the end of the day, I think my purpose is simple: I make people feel good—whether it’s through their bellies or through their hearts.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t easy getting here. When I first started this journey, I was a new mom in a brand-new state. I had moved from Ohio to Atlanta in 2017, working from home with no family around except my now husband, and no friends. At the same time, I was attending graduate school full-time virtually, interning 30 hours a week, and working as a waitress at a Mexican restaurant. Later, when I launched my baking business, life was just as demanding—I was working 40 hours a week, coming home to cook dinner and spend time with my family, then baking cakes until 5 a.m. before getting up to do it all again by 9 a.m. Somehow, I kept going. Now, things have leveled out, and I’m in a place where I can focus solely on my private practice and my baking business—creating my own schedule and building a life that truly reflects both of my passions.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Our Healing Space / Get You a Me Creations?
Now, I’m proud to wear two hats. My private practice, Our Healing Space, is currently accepting clients. My business partner and I specialize in women’s issues, men’s issues, trauma, depression, grief, and more. We have a passion for helping people reach new heights, and we named our practice Our Healing Space because we want every client to know they are not alone. We walk with them on their journey, offering holistic healing every step of the way.
Our private practice also host a podcast. I envision that growing to new heights as well. We noticed so much red pill content on the internet and felt it necessary for professionals to step into the chat and provide information based off of human development, interaction and psychology not solely based on opinion.
Alongside my work in therapy, I run a home-based baking business built on love, quality, and soul in every bite. My cakes are known for their unique flavors and one-of-a-kind designs. From weddings to birthday parties to baby showers, I take pride in making life’s most important memories even more delicious.
I make my husband and my sons birthday cake every year and the same joy and happiness it brings to them I am determined to bring to any one who trust me to create something beautifully delicious for any special occasion.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I would like my private practice to continue to touch and change lives. I would like for it to hire more up and coming therapist who want to do the same. I want to turn it into a bigger safe place that can provide more to the community on all levels.
As far as my baking business I would like to hire a small staff and be able to service bigger events. I would like to grow my skills and become a top pick for wedding cakes and large scale events and still maintain my presence as a source for monumental occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, gender reveals or just a sweet tooth craving.
I want to have something to pass down to my children one day. I want them to have something they can help with as a teen and if it’s something they love and enjoy they can take over when I’m ready to retire. All in all I want to continue to make a difference and spread joy and love the best way I know how.
