Community Highlights: Meet Marlina Yarbrough of SeKured Hair Braiding

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlina Yarbrough.

Hi Marlina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started through my desire for baby dolls, more specifically, “doll heads”. I didn’t enjoy dress up as much as I enjoyed styling hair. I soon began practicing on friends & family. My family zoned in on what I was doing and notice that I was actually good. My brother often times wanting his way would encourage me that I could achieve certain cornrow designs at that time. My journey took off from there. Initially, I had no desire to do hair. I wanted more. More, because the stylist I saw & knew didn’t really model success. I am where I am today because others realized my gift & I know my passion. My story thus far will fulfill my purpose.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I struggled with getting out of my head. My thoughts would think things that made me believe that I didn’t belong. I also would question whether things were too good to be true.

Nothing for me was smooth because I’m a perfectionist! This is not a healthy trait, however, unlearning is a process. I always felt like there’s more I could be doing. I feared being stagnant. & oftentimes, even now I have to practice enjoying & celebrating my moments. I’m much better at this. So the road is much smoother now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SeKured Hair Braiding?
I’ve been braiding since 2007. I didn’t take braiding serious until 2014. I specialize in braids, specifically knotless braids & box braids. I’m known for my professionalism & unmatched timeliness. Being well rounded & respectful to all I come in contact with sets me apart from your average braider. I enjoy traveling to other states to braid. If you’re interested in my services, I do drop in different cities. Contact me to get me near you!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1. This is the word of God. I do believe it to be true. The grass withers & the flowers fade. But the word of our God shall stand forever. God being a man of his word & keeping his promises reminds me that he’ll always take care of me/his child.
