Today we’d like to introduce you to Monika Hilton
Hi Monika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a passionate chef and cake artist with a dream that led me to compete on national television. However, my journey took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease that significantly affected my mobility and ability to continue in my profession. Despite these challenges, I refused to let the disease define me. I pivoted from being a chef to becoming an advocate for Scleroderma awareness, using my story to inspire others facing similar struggles. My journey is one of resilience, faith, and a relentless pursuit of purpose, leading to the creation of “The Mo Experience” where I combine my culinary talents, advocacy, and personal experiences to offer something unique and impactful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has certainly not been a smooth road. The biggest challenge came with my Scleroderma diagnosis, which drastically changed my life. I had to deal with the physical pain and limitations imposed by the disease, which led to the end of my career as a chef and cake artist. Beyond the physical struggles, there were significant emotional battles, including depression and feelings of worthlessness. Losing my mother and surviving COVID-19 twice only added to the emotional burden. However, each struggle has taught me valuable lessons in resilience, faith, and the importance of mental and physical wellness.
We’ve been impressed with The Mo Experience, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Mo Experience is a brand that encapsulates my journey, combining my love for culinary arts with my mission to raise awareness about Scleroderma. We offer a unique blend of services, including my autobiography and cookbook, where I share not only my favorite recipes but also my personal story of resilience. The Mo Experience is known for its authenticity and the genuine connection it fosters with customers.
A key part of this journey is my book “I Decided,” which intimately details my experiences with Scleroderma, my struggles, and my triumphs. It’s more than just a memoir; it’s a source of inspiration for anyone facing their own battles, encouraging them to persevere and find strength in their story.
Additionally, I’ve expanded my creative expression through the Monika Hilton Art Gallery. After Scleroderma made it difficult to continue my work as a chef, I traded my spatula for a paintbrush, channeling my passion into visual art. The gallery showcases my artwork, which serves as both a creative outlet and a platform to raise awareness about Scleroderma.
What sets us apart is the deeply personal nature of the brand—everything I offer is rooted in my life experiences and my commitment to inspire and uplift others. I’m most proud of how the brand reflects my journey and continues to evolve with me, offering not just products but hope and inspiration to those who need it. Whether it’s through my book, my artwork, or my culinary creations, The Mo Experience is about resilience, creativity, and the power of transformation.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The COVID-19 crisis taught me the importance of adaptability and self-care. Facing the pandemic while battling a chronic illness made it clear that prioritizing health and wellness is non-negotiable. It also underscored the significance of mental resilience and the need to stay connected with loved ones, even if only virtually. The crisis further reinforced my commitment to my brand’s mission of providing not just products, but also comfort and inspiration during challenging times.
