Community Highlights: Meet Nikki Tucker of Simply Locs By Nikki Natural Hair Care Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Tucker.

Hi Nikki, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into the beauty industry started long before I ever became a licensed cosmetologist or business owner. As a 12-year-old girl, I simply loved doing hair. It was something that came naturally to me, and over time I realized it was a gift. Family members, friends, and people in my community would trust me with their hair, and I enjoyed every opportunity to learn, create, and help someone feel their best.

One of the defining moments in my journey came while I was still in high school. During a conversation with my parents, I told them that I wanted to do hair and own a salon one day. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what the path would look like, but I knew that beauty and hair care were where my passion lived. That vision stayed with me and ultimately became the foundation for the career and business I have today.

I went on to become a licensed Master Cosmetologist and eventually found my niche in natural hair and loc care. What drew me to locs was not only the artistry involved but also the opportunity to be a part of someone’s personal journey. Locs often represent confidence, culture, self-expression, and transformation, and I am honored to play a role in that process for my clients.

That passion led me to create Simply Locs By Nikki Natural Hair Care Salon. My goal has always been to provide more than just hair services. I wanted to create a welcoming environment where clients receive professional care, education, and support while embracing the beauty and versatility of their natural hair. Over the years, I have specialized in traditional locs, microlocs, and Sisterlocks, helping clients maintain healthy hair while building meaningful relationships along the way.

Like many entrepreneurs, my journey has included challenges, sacrifices, and valuable lessons. Building a business requires persistence, faith, and a commitment to continuous growth. Every obstacle has strengthened my determination and helped shape the salon owner and beauty professional I am today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but every challenge has taught me something valuable.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that being talented at your craft and successfully running a business are two very different things. As beauty professionals, we often enter the industry because we love serving clients and creating beautiful results, but entrepreneurship requires you to become a marketer, accountant, customer service representative, manager, and strategist all at the same time.

Like many salon owners, I have faced challenges building and maintaining a consistent clientele, navigating economic shifts, and learning how to grow my business while still working behind the chair. There were times when I had to make difficult decisions, adjust my approach, and step outside of my comfort zone in order to keep moving forward.

Much like the loc journey itself, business growth doesn’t always happen as quickly as we’d like. There were seasons when I questioned whether growth would happen as quickly as I envisioned, but those seasons taught me patience, persistence, and the importance of trusting the process. They also reminded me that meaningful growth—whether in business or in life—takes time, consistency, and commitment.

Another challenge has been learning to balance my passion for serving clients with the need to work on the business itself. It’s easy to spend all of your time behind the chair, but long-term growth requires planning, systems, marketing, and continual education. Learning to shift between being a stylist and being a business owner has been one of the most valuable lessons of my entrepreneurial journey.

Through it all, I’ve learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and faith. Every obstacle has helped me grow not only as a business owner but also as a person. Looking back, I can honestly say that the challenges have shaped me into a stronger businesswoman and entrepreneur, and have given me an even greater appreciation for the journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Simply Locs By Nikki Natural Hair Care Salon specializes in healthy loc care, maintenance, and education for clients at every stage of their loc journey. I provide services for traditional locs, microlocs, and Sisterlocks, with a strong emphasis on maintaining the health and integrity of the hair while helping clients achieve their desired look.

What sets my business apart is that I believe loc care is about much more than hair. Locs are often connected to a person’s identity, confidence, lifestyle, and self-expression. Because of that, I take a personalized approach with each client, focusing not only on the service itself but also on educating clients about proper hair care, maintenance, and realistic expectations throughout their journey.

As a licensed Master Cosmetologist, I combine technical knowledge with years of hands-on experience to help clients make informed decisions about their hair. Whether someone is starting their first set of locs, transitioning to microlocs, maintaining Sisterlocks, or addressing concerns related to scalp and hair health, my goal is to provide professional guidance and quality care every step of the way.

One thing I am especially proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Many of my clients have been with me for years, allowing me to be part of important milestones in their lives while also being a part of their hair journey. Building those long-term relationships and watching clients grow in confidence is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do.

At its core, Simply Locs By Nikki is built on education, professionalism, healthy hair care, and genuine client relationships. I want people to know that when they sit in my chair, they are receiving more than a service—they are receiving a partner who is invested in the health of their hair and the success of their loc journey.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a combination of shy and outgoing. I could be quiet and observant in new situations, but once I became comfortable, my personality would shine through. I’ve always been someone who enjoys observing people and the world around me, and I think that helped me develop the ability to listen, learn, and understand others.

I was also very creative from an early age. While other kids may have had different hobbies, I was the child who always wanted to play in someone’s hair. Looking back, that passion was one of the earliest signs of the career path I would eventually pursue. Even then, I enjoyed creating, learning, and expressing myself through hair.

Leadership, independence, and responsibility were also important parts of who I was growing up. I was raised to be a leader rather than a follower, and those values stayed with me throughout my life. I was never much of a troublemaker—I preferred to stay focused, do the right thing, and avoid unnecessary problems.

One memory that stands out is wanting to get my first job as a teenager. My parents felt I didn’t need one because they provided everything I needed, but I wanted the independence that came with earning my own money. I wanted the ability to buy things for myself and begin creating my own path. Looking back, I realize that desire for independence was an early glimpse of the businesswoman and entrepreneur I would later become.

I’ve also always been a caring person and a good listener. Friends often came to me to talk, share their thoughts, or seek advice. Even today, those same qualities help me build strong relationships with my clients and create an environment where people feel comfortable, heard, and valued.
