Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn & Edward Alshut.
Hi Shawn & Edward, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We began our personal and professional collaboration when we met as students in the Master of Architecture program at the University of Texas at Austin. We have lived and worked in Houston, Boston and Atlanta, in firms that have given us a depth of experience in architecture and interior design, in both commercial and residential projects types.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Studio A2 was born out of the market conditions of the 2009 Global Recession. Starting our firm was “like getting in on the ground floor of a building being evacuated.” SINK OR SWIM!
Our mantra was “The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster. Strangely it turns out well. I don’t know how. It’s a Mystery.” (Shakespeare in Love)
We learned it takes a lot of hard work, an ability to see the big picture and the small details, and the support of colleagues, advisors and clients to succeed.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
When we started Studio A2 we hung two signs up for inspiration : “Now is the Right Time” and ” Life begins at the end of your Comfort Zone.” (Neale Donald Walsch).
Starting our firm in 2009 was a risk, but it was the right time to take it.
Our personal and professional lives really did begin a new chapter at the end of our Comfort Zone…
