Community Highlights: Meet Sofia Arango of Latinos en Pizza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Arango.

Sofia Arango

Hi Sofia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey began as a first-generation immigrant from Caracas, Venezuela. Arriving in the United States in 2017, I immediately immersed myself in the food industry, driven by a passion for culinary arts and entrepreneurship. While pursuing my studies in business administration, I seized every opportunity to learn and grow within the industry.

In 2020, I co-founded the Atlanta Pizza Truck, a mobile pizzeria that quickly gained popularity for its authentic flavors and innovative approach to traditional recipes. Through this venture, I honed my skills in business management, customer service, and culinary creativity.

Inspired by my roots and the vibrant Latino community, I founded Latinos en Pizza, a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting and empowering Latino pizza makers. Through networking events, workshops, and mentorship programs, Latinos en Pizza fosters a supportive community where members can share their passion for pizza while celebrating their cultural heritage.

Today, I am proud to continue my journey as an entrepreneur, advocate, and student of business administration. Each step along the way has been fueled by my commitment to excellence, my love for food, and my desire to make a positive impact in my community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. As an immigrant, I faced numerous challenges from the very beginning. Arriving with little more than determination, I encountered the uphill battle of establishing myself in a new country. Being an outsider meant facing skepticism and sometimes even prejudice. Locals often preferred to work with people from their own country, which made it challenging to build trust and connections in the industry.

Moreover, the food industry itself is demanding, requiring long hours and relentless dedication. I had to work tirelessly to learn the intricacies of the trade, from mastering recipes to understanding the nuances of running a business. On top of that, navigating the complex web of regulations and compliance in a new country was a significant hurdle. From licensing to food safety standards, there was a steep learning curve in understanding how everything operates in the United States.

Despite these obstacles, I persevered, fueled by my passion for entrepreneurship and my desire to create a better future for myself and my community. Each challenge was a learning opportunity, and every setback only strengthened my resolve to succeed.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The most important quality for my success has been resilience. In the face of adversity, I’ve learned to persevere and not let myself be defeated, even when things go wrong – and sometimes they go very wrong. Resilience has been my guiding force, helping me navigate challenges and setbacks with determination and optimism.

One of the key aspects of resilience is learning to accept and challenge negatives. Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered people who didn’t believe in my projects and tried to put me down. Instead of letting their negativity hold me back, I used it as fuel to prove them wrong and push forward. By embracing challenges and staying resilient, I’ve been able to overcome obstacles and achieve success in my endeavors.
