Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarryn Hoff.
Hi Tarryn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I often tell people that my career has never been about fitness alone—it has always been about helping people become the best version of themselves. My journey began more than 25 years ago when I became a certified personal trainer while I was still in college. What started as a love for exercise quickly evolved into a fascination with human behavior. I noticed that the biggest obstacle most people faced wasn’t a lack of knowledge—it was staying motivated, believing in themselves, and developing habits they could sustain for life. That realization completely changed the direction of my career. As I continued working with clients, I pursued advanced education because I wanted to understand not only how the body works, but why people succeed or struggle with lasting change. That path eventually led me to earn my MBA and later a Ph.D. in Performance Psychology, where my research focused on self-determination and what motivates people to achieve long-term success in personal training. Today, I wear several hats that all connect to the same mission. I’m the owner of GoTarryn! Health & Fitness, where I provide personalized in-home fitness and wellness coaching throughout the Atlanta area. I’m also a university professor and doctoral dissertation chair, mentoring doctoral students as they complete one of the most challenging academic accomplishments of their lives. Whether I’m helping someone regain their strength after retirement, coaching an executive toward better health, or guiding a doctoral learner across the finish line, my purpose is the same: helping people realize they’re capable of more than they ever imagined. Looking back, the journey certainly wasn’t easy. Like every entrepreneur, I’ve experienced uncertainty, setbacks, long hours, and moments where I questioned whether all the hard work would pay off. But each challenge reinforced an important lesson: meaningful success isn’t built overnight. It’s earned through consistency, integrity, lifelong learning, and genuinely caring about the people you serve. If there’s one thing I’d like people to remember about me, it’s that I believe health is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and those we love. My goal has never simply been to help people exercise—it’s to help them live longer, move better, think bigger, and enjoy life more fully. If I can leave people healthier, more confident, and more hopeful than when we first met, then I consider my work a success.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all—and honestly, I don’t think most worthwhile journeys are. One of the biggest challenges has simply been wearing so many hats. As a small business owner, you’re not just the person providing the service. You’re also the marketer, accountant, scheduler, customer service representative, website manager, and strategist. There are days when you spend more time working on the business than in the business. Another challenge has been balancing entrepreneurship with family life and continuing education. While building my business, I was also pursuing graduate degrees, eventually earning my Ph.D. in Performance Psychology. There were many late nights, early mornings, and sacrifices along the way, but I always believed that investing in myself would ultimately allow me to serve others at a higher level. Like every entrepreneur, I’ve also experienced uncertainty. Economic downturns, changing markets, and even the COVID-19 pandemic forced many of us to rethink how we worked and how we connected with clients. Rather than seeing those moments as setbacks, I tried to view them as opportunities to adapt, learn, and become more resilient. Perhaps the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that success isn’t built during the easy seasons—it’s built during the difficult ones. Challenges force you to become more creative, more disciplined, and more patient. They’ve taught me to focus on relationships over transactions, to continue learning, and to never become complacent. Looking back after more than 25 years, I can honestly say I’m grateful for the obstacles. They shaped not only my business, but also my character. They reminded me that lasting success isn’t about avoiding adversity—it’s about continuing to move forward with integrity, purpose, and a genuine desire to help others.
We’ve been impressed with GoTarryn! Health & Fitness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When people ask what I do, I usually tell them that I help people become stronger—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. I’m the founder of GoTarryn! Health & Fitness, a private, concierge-style personal training and wellness practice serving the greater Atlanta area. For more than 25 years, I’ve worked one-on-one with clients in their homes, neighborhoods, and private communities, creating individualized programs that improve strength, mobility, balance, confidence, and long-term health. What makes my practice unique is the combination of science and psychology. While exercise is certainly important, I’ve learned that lasting success is rarely determined by the perfect workout. It’s determined by mindset, motivation, accountability, and building habits that people can sustain for years—not just weeks. That philosophy eventually inspired me to earn a Ph.D. in Performance Psychology, and it continues to influence every client relationship I have today. I’m especially passionate about helping adults age well. My goal isn’t simply to help someone lose weight or lift heavier weights. I want my clients to remain independent, active, and able to enjoy life with their families for decades to come. Whether that’s helping a retiree improve balance and reduce fall risk, assisting someone recovering from illness or injury, or coaching a busy professional toward better health, I measure success by how much someone’s quality of life improves. Outside of my private practice, I also serve as a university professor and doctoral dissertation chair, mentoring doctoral learners as they complete their research and earn their degrees. Although those careers may seem very different, they’re connected by one common purpose: helping people realize their potential and accomplish goals they once thought were beyond their reach. At the end of the day, I don’t believe I’m simply in the fitness business. I’m in the people business. Every client, every student, and every interaction is an opportunity to educate, encourage, and make a lasting difference. If someone leaves healthier, more confident, and more hopeful because our paths crossed, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I set out to do.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One of the things I enjoy most is being a lifelong learner. Whether I’m reading, listening to podcasts, or exploring new research, I’m always looking for ideas that can help me become a better coach, educator, husband, father, and business owner. One book that has had a tremendous influence on me is Outlive by Dr. Peter Attia. I appreciate his evidence-based approach to longevity and preventive medicine, and it aligns closely with my philosophy that fitness isn’t just about living longer—it’s about living better. Helping people maintain strength, mobility, independence, and vitality throughout life has become a central focus of my work. Because of my background in performance psychology, I’m also drawn to books that explore human motivation, habits, leadership, and decision-making. I enjoy authors like James Clear, Simon Sinek, and Carol Dweck, whose work continually reminds me that meaningful success is built through small, consistent actions and a growth mindset. Professionally, I regularly read peer-reviewed research in exercise science, psychology, and behavioral health. Staying current with emerging evidence allows me to continually refine the way I coach clients and mentor doctoral students. As for apps, I probably use my calendar more than anything else—it keeps my busy schedule organized between my personal training clients, university teaching, dissertation mentoring, and family life. I also appreciate technology that helps me stay connected with clients and makes it easier to deliver a personalized experience. More than any one book, podcast, or app, I think curiosity has become one of my greatest resources. The moment we believe we’ve learned everything is the moment we stop growing. I hope to always remain a student of life, continually learning so I can better serve the people around me.
