Today we’d like to introduce you to Unika Nelson.
Unika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a child I have always known I wanted to do a profession where I help others. I became interested in therapy specifically sex/relationship therapy while watching shows like “Real Sex” or “Dr. Ruth.” I received my undergrade degree from University of Alaska Fairbanks where I majored in Communication, from there I went on to get my Masters in Social Work with a Mental Health Focus at Clark Atlanta University. After working several jobs in the field I finally started my business and developed Sexuality is a Journey. LLC. I currently counsel couples and individuals who struggle with communication, intimacy and sex. I also work with these who have mood disorders and addictions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has many struggles along the way mostly in the beginning because of the amount of hours working and not being able to focus on my area of interest because I was working towards my licensure. Also, the pay was not great starting out fresh from Grad school.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sexuality is a Journey, LLC?
You should know everyone has their public identify and then they have their “sexual selves.” My goal is to guide people to become comfortable with their sexual selves and work on positive sex communication. Sex therapy is still a growing specialty and there aren’t many people who look like me as a professional. I want to be a positive model and provide my clients with success in not only the relationships with others but most importantly with themselves.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Being a therapist I think you always are taking risks because these are peoples lives and they come to you being vulnerable and as a professional you have to make sure you are a safe space and supportive. There is always a risk your client may not vibe with you but you can’t take that personally, the goal is for them to feels comfort even if that means not engaging in therapy with you.
