Community Highlights: Meet YaQutullah Muhammad of Nutrition Prescriptions

Today we’d like to introduce you to YaQutullah Muhammad.

Hi YaQutullah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story really starts on Saturday mornings at Eastern Market in Detroit, waking up early, going with my Dad, and watching him pick the freshest produce and meats like he knew every farmer personally. Because honestly, he kind of did.

Growing up between Atlanta and Detroit with a father who understood food at that level planted something in me that never went away. It just took a while to grow into what it was always meant to become.
That foundation eventually led me to pursue nutrition professionally because I knew firsthand how powerfully food shapes health, identity, and quality of life. I became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with a deep commitment to making nutrition guidance accessible, personalized, and genuinely useful for real people living real lives.
I founded Nutrition Prescriptions on a simple but powerful belief that evidence-based nutrition care should feel approachable, not overwhelming. That every person deserves guidance that was built around their unique lifestyle, their health goals, and yes, their culture and their food story.

Today I specifically focus on helping women navigate their health concerns whether that is managing diabetes, navigating menopause, supporting a healthy pregnancy and postpartum recovery, or simply building sustainable habits that make them feel like themselves again. I meet every client where they are and we build from there together.
From Eastern Market on a Saturday morning to building personalized nutrition strategies for women across the country — the thread connecting all of it has always been the same. Food is medicine. And when it is used with intention, it changes everything.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth is not exactly the word I would use — but I would not trade the journey for anything.
Building a nutrition practice from the ground up while staying true to a mission of accessible, personalized care comes with its own set of real challenges. And I think the most honest way I can describe the road is this — there have been two hills I have been climbing simultaneously since the beginning.
The first is the work itself — helping people. That part I love deeply and it has never felt like a burden. But helping people change their relationship with food and their health is not a simple or linear process. It requires trust, consistency, patience, and meeting people in places they have sometimes been avoiding for years. Building that kind of relationship takes time. And learning how to show up for clients in a way that is both clinically excellent and genuinely human — that is a skill you keep developing. It never really stops.
The second hill is the system side of things. Healthcare access in this country is complicated. There are real barriers — financial, geographical, systemic — that stand between people and the nutrition support they need and deserve. Navigating insurance systems, making sure clients know that nutrition counseling is often covered, reaching communities that have historically been underserved by healthcare — that work is ongoing and it is not always easy.
What I have learned is that both of those hills require persistence, creativity, and a willingness to keep finding new ways to build bridges. Partnering with platforms like Nourish and Fay Nutrition has been part of that — making it possible for more clients to access quality nutrition care at little to no cost through their insurance.
The road has not always been smooth. But every step of it has been purposeful. And that makes all the difference.

We’ve been impressed with Nutrition Prescriptions, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nutrition Prescriptions is an Atlanta-based nutrition consulting practice built on one core belief — that everyone deserves nutrition care that was made for them. Not for a general population. Not for an average patient. For them specifically.
I specialize in working with women navigating real, complex health concerns. Diabetes and blood sugar management. Heart health and hypertension. Menopause and hormonal changes. Prenatal and postpartum nutrition. Gut health. Weight management. These are not just clinical categories to me — they are the lived experiences of real women who come to me having already tried the generic approaches and found that they simply did not fit their lives.
What sets Nutrition Prescriptions apart is the intersection of three things that you do not always find together in one practice — clinical excellence, cultural competence, and genuine accessibility.
The cultural competence piece is deeply personal to me. I grew up with food that was connected to culture, community, and identity. I understand what it means to sit across from a client and honor not just their health goals but their food story — where they come from, what foods feel like home, and how to build a nutrition strategy around that rather than against it. That is something I bring to every single client interaction and it is reflected in the book I contributed to — Culture Foodways and Counseling: A Guide to Culturally Sensitive Nutrition Care in the United States — which was just named a 2026 Gold Winner in the Hermes Creative Awards. That recognition means everything to me because it validates work I believe in so deeply.
On the accessibility side — I am proud that clients can work with me through Nourish and Fay Nutrition, two telehealth platforms where most clients pay absolutely nothing out of pocket because sessions are covered by their insurance. And for those who want a more direct, private pay experience, my Goal Setting Session at Nutrition Prescriptions is where we sit down together, build clarity around your health goals, and create a personalized strategy from the ground up — with that investment going toward continued membership and support within Nutrition Prescriptions.
Beyond one-on-one work, Nutrition Prescriptions offers a growing library of resources and bundles covering everything from diabetes management to prenatal and postpartum nutrition to Ramadan-specific guidance for our Muslim community clients. We also offer business consulting for healthcare practices and wellness organizations that want to build or strengthen their nutrition programming.
Brand wise — I am most proud of the trust this community has placed in us. The clients who came in frustrated and overwhelmed and left with clarity and a plan they could actually live with. The partnerships we have built. The resources we have created. The fact that Nutrition Prescriptions has become a space where people feel genuinely seen and supported in their health journey.
What I want readers to know is this. If you have ever felt like the nutrition advice you received was not made for your life — your culture, your budget, your schedule, your specific health concerns — Nutrition Prescriptions was built for you. You do not have to keep starting over. You just need a strategy that was built around who you actually are.
That is what we do. And we do it with everything we have got.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
One of the greatest resources in my life is the Quran. It serves as a source of guidance, reflection, and balance, not only in my personal life but also in how I approach health and wellness. As a Muslim dietitian, I appreciate how our faith emphasizes moderation, gratitude, mindful eating, and caring for the body as a trust from Allah.
One book that holds special significance for me is Culture, Foodways and Counseling: A Guide to Culturally Sensitive Nutrition Care in the United States. Not only is it an invaluable resource for understanding the intersection of culture, food, and nutrition care, but I also had the privilege of serving as a contributing author. The experience reinforced my belief that effective nutrition counseling must recognize and respect the cultural backgrounds, traditions, and lived experiences of the individuals we serve.
I also enjoy listening to podcasts, particularly those focused on women’s health, wellness, and personal growth. I have had the privilege of being a guest on several podcasts that align closely with my mission. One of my favorites is Healing Me First with Chef Bee, where we discussed Healing From Birth Over 40 and explored the importance of nutrition, recovery, and self-care for women. I was also featured on Meal Prep Monday and Fresh Focus Team, Episode #25, Diversify Your Plate, where we discussed practical ways to improve nutrition through variety, balance, and culturally relevant foods.
