Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Samara De Paiva.
Tamara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my career as an esthetician at a very young age. In high school, I started a part-time job as a receptionist in a skin care clinic and discovered what it was to be an esthetician. Rather quickly after my seventeenth birthday, I filed my paperwork and began my journey as an esthetician apprentice. Suely Smith, my mentor taught me everything I needed to know and set me off to begin building my own clientele. I was drawn to waxing and noticed that my clients began to always book my eyebrow services. This is when I realized how much art was involved in eyebrow shaping and fell in love. I became known for eyebrows in my area and built my entire business around it. I like to think that the eyebrow world found me and not the other way around. I’ve known been practicing for over seven years and can’t wait for many more!
Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but it’s been very exciting. My biggest struggle was having confidence in my work in the beginning and trusting the process. I am a perfectionist and tend to be very hard on myself. The art of eyebrow shaping seems very easy to master to the outside world, but it’s far from it. There is a large learning curve and it requires a great deal of patience. As far as business ownership, the biggest struggle was starting! You over think every step of the way and want to make sure every little detail is looked at. Unfortunately, that is far from reality. There will be a lot of unexpected surprises that will also require a lot of patience. Funny enough, I saw a social media post recently that said: “Sometimes, we can’t have all our ducks in a row, we just have to gather what we have and make a run for it.” This is exactly what starting a business is like. My advice for anyone starting out is to lift your head up with as much confidence as you can and make a run for it. Soon enough, all the pieces will fall together and you will be so thankful you did.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My work is mainly focused on hair removal. I offer full body waxes for both female and male clients and have been doing so for many years. At the very start, I became known for my eyebrow shaping techniques and how I put extra emphasis on bringing the brow to its full potential. What sets me apart is also what I’m very proud of. And it’s the relationship I am able to build with my clients. I like to remember all of my clients by getting to know small details of their life. This makes sure that they have a personable and pleasant experience and it makes sure that I remember their preferences. I will always go above and beyond to make sure all my clients are treated with care and know that they’re being listened to.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The biggest barrier is the products being produced. Unfortunately, a great deal of cosmetic chemists are men but producing mostly products that women use. There are a lot of needs that are being overlooked because of it. Fortunately, a lot more women are taking part in the science behind the chair and beginning to formulate products that we are all excited to use. I myself decided to pursue a degree in chemistry to be able to fill that gap and am very excited for the future. I hope to see many more women take the lead in the industry.
