Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciera Walker.
Hi Ciera, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, my greatest passions were reading, writing, and speaking, so a future in journalism was always the plan for me. High school was around the time when I started taking pursuing it as a career seriously; attending journalism camps and summer writing programs within my state. In college, I majored in Journalism, minored in Film Studies, and was in the Sports Media Program at the University of Georgia. UGA was where my love for sports media developed. Originally, I only saw myself as a reporter or anchor for a news station, reporting on general assignments throughout the community. However, UGA opened me up to the world of sports media, along with the helping me gain my first internships in social media with ESPN. I wrote a lot throughout college, but social media became my primary focus after my internships. When I graduated, I began working in social media for House of Highlights. It was an amazing opportunity that allowed me to cover sports games/events, interview athletes/coaches, and expand my creativity for social platforms. Now, I work for The Volume, managing social media pages for a couple of the shows within the brand.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say the struggles are still unfolding before me. While I love the work that I’m currently doing and have gotten to do, I’m still not where I’d like to be. The road of social media has helped me get started in this business, but I still hold strong to my love for writing and journalism. I recently began creating my own magazine to tap back into that side of media. However, learning what it takes to develop a magazine and an audience for it has been challenging. As well as, balancing my day to day work duties, with my personal passions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What sets me apart from others is I do a bit of everything. I choose to not limit my interests, by narrowing them down to one path or skillset. I love writing, so I self published my first book while in college, titled, Hiding My Hurt, Withholding My Healing. I love being an author and plan to publish more books in the future. I love interviewing people, telling their stories, and sharing meaningful moments with an audience. So, I created my magazine, Nobody’s Nobody Magazine, as a way for everyday individuals to have their stories told. I love videography and content creation, so I began filming my everyday life in unique ways for platforms like YouTube and TikTok. I’m proud of all of my endeavors. I’m proud of myself for always following my interests, wherever they lead me.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m always reading a variety of different books. Reading is my main source of inspiration. Sometimes I’ll read biographies or self-help books by people I look up to, like Issa Rae or Michelle Obama, but recently I’ve gotten back to reading fiction books. Immersing myself into fictional worlds has reconnected me with my childhood self, and that’s been the best source of inspiration lately. My faith is also a big part of who I am, so the Bible is a vital resource that helps sustain me throughout my life.
