Conversations with Drury Platt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drury Platt.

Hi Drury, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Basically man my story was a long road of basketball with some ups and downs of course I started taking is serious when I was in 8th grade I was ranked 300 in the nation and had it all it felt like I was on top of the world lost it all during highschool and now im a senior with a full ride to a D1 college because I fought through the adversity but the jobs not finished I gotta keep fighting

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road was not smooth at all I attended Wayne School Of Engineering and we don’t have high school sports so if you were to want to play high school sports you would have to play for goldsboro and that’s arguably the best team in the city over the years , always making the playoffs final 4s all that good stuff so I know that’s where I had to go . my freshman year in high school I was on jv with coach Coley nothing was wrong with that but he ended up leaving the coaching staff and that was a connection I really cherished , it brung me confidence . But after that my sophomore year I got put on JV again when I really feel like I should’ve at least been on varsity to learn even if im not playing much, but I was one of the better players on there and me and my teammates led our JV squad to a conference championship that year but there was still a hole left….I wanted to do it on varsity I knew with the work that I put in that’s what I desired and deserved. Junior year came and I finally got put on varsity I prepared and worked my butt off all summer hoping that I make the team and I did only for a freshman from my actual school to take my potential role even if he wasn’t doing the best I just always got overlooked and that went on for the whole season. So after that year I got down on myself but not enough to where I wanted to quit because im stronger than that and always will be so I worked and worked all summer like I usually do to get what I want and achieve , And I did ! my senior year I started catching the flow coach started trusting me and I ended up being a key player in the rotation and I was finally able to showcase my skills and market myself a little bit and that’s what I did to end up acquiring an D1 scholarship it felt like everyone saw the killer I was on the court except my highchool coach and that almost broke me because I didn’t know what to do to fix it .

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Right now im committed to be a D1 athlete and I leave for school in July

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My personal mentor was easily my Cousin Kwon he was there for me from the start to end , beginning to finish , through thick and thin it didn’t matter if I wanted to get up to workout at 6:00AM he was up with me , And of course I can’t leave out my mom she was the real MVP in my journey. But to find a mentor I would say get someone who actually wants to see you win and trust me they’ll try just as hard as you do to get you where you’re going , find someone you trust , wants the best. for you and is willing to go to bat for you
