Conversations with Edith Bell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edith Bell.

Hi Edith , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2001, I want my 5-year old son to learn Mandarin Chinese. We found Chinese Cultural School of Atlanta. I was so passionate I became the room mom. There the journey began…soon I was involved in PTA, then School Board, assisting Principal for few years till to serve as a Principal.

As I reflect on my 13th year serving as Principal of Chinese Cultural School of Atlanta (also known as: CCS), I am filled with gratitude, pride, and excitement as we celebrate a remarkable milestone—the CCS 30th Anniversary.

For three decades, CCS has been a place where students have grown academically, spiritually, and personally. It has been a community built on faith, dedication, excellence, and a shared commitment to nurturing young minds. This anniversary is not only a celebration of our past achievements but also a tribute to the countless students, families, teachers, staff members, volunteers, and supporters who have contributed to making CCS the special place it is today.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing extraordinary moments of growth, perseverance, and success. I have watched students discover their talents, build lifelong friendships, and develop the confidence to pursue their dreams. I have seen teachers inspire a love of learning and families partner with us to create a strong foundation for future generations. These experiences have reinforced my belief that CCS is much more than a school—it is a family!

As we celebrate 30 years of excellence, we also look ahead with great anticipation. The world continues to change, bringing new opportunities and challenges, but our mission remains constant. We will continue to provide a nurturing environment where students are encouraged to achieve their highest potential, develop strong character, and become compassionate leaders who make a positive impact in their communities.

This milestone gives us an opportunity to honor the vision of those who established CCS 30 years ago. Their dedication laid the groundwork for the thriving school we enjoy today. It is now our responsibility to carry that vision forward and continue building upon their legacy.

To our students, thank you for bringing joy, energy, and purpose to our campus each day. To our parents, thank you for your trust and partnership. To our faculty and staff, thank you for your unwavering commitment and passion. Together, we have accomplished so much, and together, we will continue to achieve even greater things.

Congratulations to CCS on 30 incredible years! As we celebrate this historic anniversary, I look forward to the future with optimism and confidence. May the next 30 years be filled with continued growth, success, faith, and excellence. 30 Many More….

Happy 30th Anniversary, CCS—and here’s to 30 more strong and inspiring years to come!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. Like many long-term leadership journeys, there have been challenges along the way. Balancing family responsibilities, a full-time career, volunteer commitments, and community service often required significant sacrifices of time and energy. There were also periods of uncertainty, limited resources, and difficult decisions that tested my patience and perseverance.

As Principal of the Chinese Cultural School, I faced challenges such as maintaining enrollment, recruiting volunteers and teachers, securing funding, adapting to changing community needs, and navigating unexpected events that affected programs and partnerships. Each obstacle required creativity, teamwork, and a commitment to our mission.

Despite these struggles, every challenge became an opportunity to learn and grow. The support of dedicated families, volunteers, staff, and community partners helped me overcome difficulties and continue moving forward. Looking back, the challenges were an important part of the journey, shaping both my leadership skills and my appreciation for the impact we have made together.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most known for my leadership in education, community service, and nonprofit management. For more than two decades, I have dedicated my time to preserving and promoting Chinese language and culture through the Chinese Cultural School (CCS) in Georgia. I began serving as a volunteer and PTA President and later became Principal in 2013, where I have had the privilege of helping guide the school’s growth and impact within the community.

Professionally, I have experience in business administration, project coordination, quality systems management, and nonprofit operations. My work often involves building partnerships, organizing large-scale cultural and educational programs, managing volunteers, overseeing compliance and administrative processes, and creating opportunities for students and families to connect with their heritage.

What I am most proud of is helping CCS reach its 30-year milestone while continuing to serve generations of students and families. Watching former students grow into successful adults, professionals, and community leaders has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. I am also proud of the strong partnerships we have built with community organizations, cultural institutions, sponsors, and local leaders that have expanded educational opportunities for our students.

What sets me apart is my commitment to service, perseverance, and ability to bring people together around a common purpose. As an immigrant from Taiwan, I understand the importance of preserving cultural identity while embracing new opportunities. I have always believed that education is not only about teaching a language but also about building character, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Whether leading a school, coordinating community events, or supporting families, I strive to serve with dedication, integrity, and a genuine passion for helping others succeed.

My greatest accomplishment is not a single project or title, but the lasting relationships I have built and the positive impact I have been able to make in the lives of students, families, volunteers, and the broader community.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about our city is its strong sense of community and the diversity of people and cultures that call it home. Having lived here for over 30 years, I have seen how residents in my community come together to support local schools, businesses, nonprofits, and community events. I especially appreciate the opportunities available for families, the welcoming atmosphere, and the willingness of people from different backgrounds to learn from and support one another. These qualities have made it possible for organizations like the Chinese Cultural School to thrive and contribute to the cultural richness of our community.

What I like least is the increasing traffic and the challenges that come with rapid growth. As the area continues to expand, transportation, congestion, and development can sometimes make it more difficult to maintain the close-knit community feel that attracted many of us here in the first place. I would also like to see even more support for cultural, educational, and community-based programs that help connect people and preserve the unique character of our city.

Overall, I am grateful to live in a city that offers opportunity, diversity, and a strong community spirit. The positive aspects far outweigh the challenges, and I am excited to see our city continue to grow while preserving the values that make it such a special place to call home. Give God all the glory for 33 years of safe and peaceful living in our Buford home of Atlanta.Georgia!
