Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Clawson.
Hi Gabrielle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I originally started my college career as an English major—aspiring to be a journalist. I was the editor-in-chief of my university paper, and I loved writing and reporting on local stories.
During my last year in school, I interned for a climate change organization called The Years Project. I worked with them on their digital edition, helping to mobilize individuals to take climate action. After that, I knew what I wanted to do was much bigger than simply writing. I knew I could take my talents and make a big impact in the world.
A few months after I graduated, I landed a job at a nonprofit called One Tree Planted—a reforestation organization focused on planting trees around the world to help combat climate change. Instantly, I fell in love with my job.
Every day, we are surrounded by trees. They are intrinsically a part of our everyday lives, yet we never truly see them. After I started at One Tree Planted, I truly realized the power of trees. They are our best natural defense against climate change. They sequester carbon, clean the air, decontaminate our waters, provide homes for so many amazing wildlife, and they help so many communities around the world thrive.
To know that my job, every day, is to help make the world a better place is so incredibly inspiring. To know that the organization I work for helps people get involved and make an impact means so much to me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As any young person, getting to where I am now was no easy road. I think people often underestimate how hard life can be for all the twenty-somethings in the world. At eighteen, you’re meant to know what you want to do with your life and start working for it. That’s so much pressure for any teenager.
For me, my career route changed so many times. I struggled to find what I was truly meant to do. Even after I graduated, it took me months to realize that writing was something I could use to impact the world.
Personal and professional struggles aside, I am infinitely proud of where I am today, and I wouldn’t have got here if not for those struggles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work for an organization called One Tree Planted. We’re a global nonprofit that focuses on reforestation to combat and mitigate the effects of climate change.
I’m a part of the marketing department, so I do a bit of design and writing. I help develop microsites to get people involved in tree planting. I also write and publish blogs on our website to help educate and inspire people to take action.
For me, while I’m certainly proud of my work, I’m most proud to be a part of an organization that is working so hard for a better tomorrow. One Tree Planted makes it easy for people to get involved and make an impact. For every dollar donated to us, we plant a tree around the world. This year, we reached an incredible milestone, having planted 100 million trees across over 70 countries globally. The trees planted have provided habitat to wildlife, clean air to breathe, and drinkable water to communities. They are nature’s best defenders, and they even make an incredible impact on a community level.
Every action helps make an impact, and being a part of that impact every day is incredibly powerful for me.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I truly think making an impact in the world makes me happy.
I’ve always believed I was put on this planet to leave it a little bit better than how I found it. I hope I’m doing that every single day. I want to make people’s lives easier and happier. People all around the world deserve to feel contentment. They deserve to know what an act of kindness feels like. I aspire to help make people’s lives better every single day. That’s what brings me joy.
