Today we’d like to introduce you to GeeZA.
Hi GeeZA, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My interest in music started at 5 when I got my first keyboard and then i started picking up different instruments at 9.
I started doing music at 11 after getting inspired by a Reed Dollaz freestyle. I heard his “Touch It” freestyle and I couldn’t help but grab a pen and pad and get to writing. It was the first time I seen anyone from Southwest rapping like that.
Producing came later at 14 when I got my first laptop, it was old as hell but I honed my craft on that 2008 Dell laptop.
I began to record and mix my own tracks when I was a freshman in college and got my first mic setup. It was just a blue ball microphone, no audio interface . Studio time was costly and I ain’t have it like that so engineering seemed like a necessity. Ever since then I started taking this artform seriously.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been the rockiest road I’ve traveled. Didn’t understand how to promote myself or even how to structure a song properly. Never was good at networking until i broke out of the “don’t dickeat” mindset that usually plagues most Philly artists.
A lot of personal and artistic growth happened thru trial and error but now I’m more calculated. Still have lots to learn.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In order, I’m a rapper/producer/engineer and I also do most of the graphics and artwork for my team and I. I’m proud of the fact that I can do all of these things thru self learning and the fact that I can motivates me to keep going for it.
I have tenacity and attention to detail that keeps me disciplined in my art.
What’s next?
In the near future, we are planning to drop some our music that we feel is ready for release and get started on content/promotion. More shows and networking events
In the distant future, we’re aiming to hit bigger performances (Rolling Loud, Coachella, Philly Roots Picnic) and opportunities for promotion and networking while also constantly building our fanbase.
