Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffery Baylock.
Hi Jeffery, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“Comedy saved my life. Growing up in Roseland, one of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods, I faced more than my share of hardship. I was raised by a blind mother, and on top of that, I experienced child abuse, bullying, and anger issues that deeply impacted me. In 2011, everything began to shift when I was introduced to stand-up comedy and mentored by comedian Mogule Sean Monroe. Comedy gave me something I desperately needed: a voice. It allowed me to turn pain into purpose, and to speak honestly about my experiences, observations, opinions, and questions. More importantly, it helped improve my mental health. Every time I step on stage, I’m not just trying to get laughs. I’m telling my story without fear and creating space for other people to feel seen, heard, and more comfortable talking about their own struggles.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“Comedy is a hard road, and early on I thought all I needed to do was be funny. Over time, I realized there’s a serious business side to it, and understanding that changed my perspective. This is not just an art form, it’s a profession. As comedians, we’re essentially independent contractors, which means we have to treat it like a business. Talent opens the door, but relationships, networking, and professionalism keep you in the game. In many ways, comedy is 10% talent and 90% business.”
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a stand-up comedian and storyteller who specializes in clean, honest comedy rooted in real-life experiences. I’m known for turning pain, personal challenges, and everyday observations into humor that connects with people. What I’m most proud of is using comedy to give my story purpose and hopefully help others feel seen. What sets me apart is my authenticity. I bring real life, real perspective, and real connection to the stage.
