Today we’d like to introduce you to La’ Shae Alexander
La’ Shae, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story starts in the best decade thus far which is the 90s and I remember being a little girl living in the hood in California. Most people when they hear that I’m from California would assume LA or somewhere really beachy but I am from a small town in California, known as Pittsburg. My grandmother moved there for my grandfather, who was stationed in California. She was from Little Rock, Arkansas. I would like to believe that genetically and spiritually the women in my life, have passed down the best parts of who I am. I’m a small town California girl with a little southern charm and a lot of curiosity for life.
I have vivid memories of the summer that I believe, changed my life, I was in elementary school and my aunt Carlynn had returned home from University at Clark Atlanta. I remember hearing stories that sounded so different than what I was living but I can remember vividly seeing images of black students smiling, laughing and thriving.
I knew I wanted to have that experience so from the time I was in elementary school all the way up until graduating high school. I knew that I would be the next person in my family to attend an HBCU and that’s what I did.
Today I am a graduate of Dillard University and I a bachelors degree in communications with a concentration in public relations with a minor in business management and for the last 11 years, I have grown into a very successful career in real estate and I’ve also made a room for the parts of me that is passionate about my Philanthropic work in Public Health that ranges from economics, housing, mental health, coparenting and women’s sexual and reproductive health.
So far I can say I’ve lived a life that I am truly proud of and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I have a beautiful little girl and a handsome young man looking up to me. I look forward to the day I get to see them, live out their dreams as bold as boldly as I have .
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is one of my favorite questions that you all ask. Since working with you guys in 6-7 years ahoy I’ve been able to grow and reflect on the challenges in my life that I’ve been able to overcome. At different points of my life I’ve been comfortable sharing some things and not others. I’ve shared that I fight fear and today I feel like a fearless winner.
To answer more specifically, one of the challenges that I grew to overcome was my own mind and unrealistic expectations. I put so much pressure on myself to be perfect and for things to go smoothly that when things did not go the way that I thought they were going to go, I felt defeated. One of the things I can remember was not finishing my degree in four years, it took me eight years to be exact. At that time, I was so close to finishing, but I fell in love and drastically slowed down my educational career to explore what love, family and marriage would be like for myself.
Now, fast forward to being a divorced mom of two I can say that was a challenge within itself. I again found myself fighting my mind. The pressure to be the perfect wife and mom only to feel like I failed.
These days people can be cruel, the internet is not kind to single moms but I choose to be kind to myself. My children need to see a mother who shows them Love. Not only the Love I give them but the Love I have for myself because they come from me and they need to know their source is Love, their home is Love and their mother despite all of life challenges is a kind, loving, forgiving, fly mom who travels, explores my curiosities, meets new people, and isn’t afraid of failing forward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
This is such an exciting time for me because I am stepping into a new venture. For the last 11 years I have been in Real Estate Management. I spent seven years in residential and the last four in commercial and my latest venture is in commercial brokerage work.
In the real estate world I’m known for making a lasting impression and on the Internet I’m known for my philanthropy work, which I would argue also makes quite an impression.
I think what set me apart from others is that I found a way to connect who I am as a multifaceted, dynamic, multidimensional woman to everything I touch and do and to everyone that I meet.
I am proud of myself because I am in alignment. Many people are talented and so many things, and we can feel pulled in a lot of different directions, but I’ve been able to sit with myself and connect every part of who I am to what I do.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I had three main parts of who I was, and the first part was who I was at home. Who I was at home was the oldest sister of four, responsible, I started cooking in the fifth grade, I was cleaning and really took on a lot of responsibility as an older sister, which I serves me in the way that I show up in my friendships, relationships and as another.
Lashae in school had two sides and I’ve grown to know the word is ambivert. I am still very much like this today where I love being home, cleaning, cooking, with my children I am most comfortable at home because it’s my safe space and I truly believe that what I pour into my home is obvious because home is where the heart is.
Now the other side of me is why I’m doing this Interview. I have this imagination that I never want to lose. It allows me to step out on faith and put myself in rooms and in positions where I get to meet people, travel and experience all that life has to offer. Oh, the stories I could tell about the wild side of my life, but we’ll save that for another time.
