Conversations with Madelena Phan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madelena Phan.

Hi Madelena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Inspired by the success of emerging YouTubers, I began teaching myself how to create videos at around 12 years old. At the time, I didn’t have a clear vision of what I wanted to produce—I simply knew I wanted to create. What started with filming on my phone soon evolved into learning how to edit videos independently on mobile apps and software.

By high school, I had developed foundational video editing skills and consistently uploaded daily content to YouTube, steadily growing both my experience and confidence as a creator. During college, I expanded my technical knowledge by learning industry-standard editing programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.

It wasn’t until my final semesters in college that I truly discovered my passion for photography and cinematography. I began volunteering as a behind-the-scenes photographer for friends’ short films, and through those experiences, others encouraged me to pursue visual storytelling professionally. Many people noted that I had a strong creative “eye,” particularly for stills and motion photography.

After graduating, I actively sought opportunities on film sets to continue learning the craft and gaining hands-on experience across multiple camera department roles. My experience includes working as a data wrangler, stills photographer, camera operator, first and second assistant camera, and script supervisor.

My passion for still photography naturally deepened my appreciation for the visual language of film. As I continued studying lighting and cinematography, I realized my ultimate goal is to become a cinematographer.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although the journey has not always been smooth, the challenges I faced taught me valuable lessons that shaped both my personal and professional growth. One of the most important lessons was learning to establish healthy boundaries with people who do not treat others with respect or professionalism.

Working on film sets also taught me the importance of clear and effective communication with every department involved in a production. I learned how essential it is to advocate for myself professionally, especially when it comes to fair treatment, timely payment, and maintaining professional standards.

Another major area of growth was becoming comfortable asking questions rather than pretending to know something I didn’t fully understand. That mindset allowed me to learn more quickly, avoid mistakes, and continue improving my craft.

Most importantly, I learned to trust myself and my abilities within every role I take on. The people who hire you place their confidence in your skills and perspective for a reason, and it is important to believe in yourself just as much as they believe in you.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work in the camera department for film and television, specializing as a stills motion picture photographer, also known as a unit stills photographer. In this role, I capture high-resolution promotional and behind-the-scenes images during production. These photographs are often used for posters, marketing campaigns, press releases, and media coverage, helping bring the story and visual identity of a project to audiences.

I am incredibly grateful for the journey that led me to this career path. Before graduating college, I was hesitant about entering the film industry because of the demanding hours, physical workload, and uncertainty that often comes with production work. Looking back, I realize I spoke too soon. What began as uncertainty turned into a journey of faith, growth, and trust in where God was leading me. I chose to step into the opportunities placed before me and allow Him to guide my path throughout the process.

I believe what sets me apart is my ability to genuinely be myself. The people you surround yourself with naturally influence and reflect who you are, and I have been fortunate to work alongside incredibly talented and inspiring individuals. The film industry is deeply rooted in collaboration, networking, and being a dependable team player. While I understand that not every personality connects with everyone, I value authenticity and appreciate the relationships and community I have built throughout my journey.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I believe that God, my parents, friends, and family have all played a pivotal role in shaping the person and creative professional I am today. My faith has been a constant source of strength throughout my journey. I truly believe God called me into a path that once felt impossible, yet He has continued to guide and sustain me every step of the way.

My parents have always wanted the very best for me, consistently supporting both my growth and well-being. Their encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that challenged me creatively and personally. I am also deeply grateful for my closest friends, who continually reminded me not to give up on pursuing something I genuinely love. Their support helped me stay motivated during moments of doubt and uncertainty.

In addition, my college classmates—many of whom are now my coworkers in the film industry—have been an important part of my journey. It has been inspiring to grow alongside people who share the same passion and dedication to filmmaking. Looking back, I realize that attending college opened doors I never could have imagined. If I had not gone to college, I may have never discovered my passion for photography on film sets. And without those experiences on set, I would not have developed such a deep appreciation for the artistry and collaboration behind filmmaking.
