Conversations with Mauricia Ikner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mauricia Ikner.

Hi Mauricia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I guess you could say of all the past, I could’ve chosen for my life that this current one really was the result of humble beginnings where there were no limits to anything I wanted to be. My life seems to be focused around art because I dabbled in art at a young age, starting with piano at three and expanding from there.
I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, but have family routes in Pensacola, Florida mostly, a military brat, I grew up with structure and discipline. The structure might be a little cookie when it comes to my execution of plans, but the discipline definitely has gotten me through many doors along with my determination.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One thing that I realized in life is that nothing worth obtaining comes easily. I definitely have had several issues and setbacks. One of the biggest challenges I ever had to face was my own mortality. At one time I used to wait 430 pounds at my heaviest at the age of 23 I decided to stop making excuses I only participating and being healthy and taking control of my weight. I did also have to deal with a DUI that took two years to completely recover from before I can move down to Georgia. The disappointment and embarrassment I felt from that situation really devastated me at the time of my life, I felt like I had let the most important people down in my inner circle, including my parents and brother. Looking back at it now I’m really blessed and thankful for going through it because it made me a stronger person, and they let me know that my resiliency is one of my best strengths.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would say my specialties lie in my makeup artistry, I have known for my intense, bold, and creative special events make up. I always enjoy Halloween season as I usually do a collection of themed looks based off different subjects of our in different costumes.My artistry does not limit itself to just make up. While it is my favorite medium to express myself in,I am the champion of several forms of art; I play six instruments, I am an oil painter who had the opportunity to help create a mural in her university, in a former Miss Alaska, USA contestant. I would say that taking a part of my home state’s pageant is one of my most grounding achievements. I didn’t even have to win, I was just blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of it. I was able to showcase my makeup artistry and embodied the joy and excitement I get from displaying my talents and arts. No one has a point of view like Mauricia does, my creative lens is what sets me apart from my friends and competitors because they will never execute a look like I will, they will never design an outfit in the vision I see, my point of view is my superpower and that’s what that’s me apart from everyone else.

How do you think about happiness?
My freedom is what makes me happy, and when I say freedom, I do mean an all sense of the word. The freedom I have to create and make things how I envision, the freedom to paint whatever subject I desire, the freedom I have of being a drag artist and being unapologetic in my delivery. Creation makes me happy because it’s the truest form of expressing myself and giving myself to the world
