Conversations with Porsha Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Porsha Williams.

Hi Porsha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Originally from Brooklyn, NY I began my spoken word journey in middle school which was focused on performing arts. My English teacher pretty much told me she was entering me into a poetry competition because she enjoyed a poem i created for one of her assignments.

I was nervous but she set me up with a mentor who would not just introduce me to the poetry world but would coach me on memorizing my pieces and performing in a manner to reach the hearts of the audience.

I competed and won 3rd place and went to nationals and was included in the last 15 artists for the competition. Even though I didn’t win, one of my poems got published with the other 15 artists that year and that was the beginning of me being a published writer.

It lead me to being able to perform in high school as well and then starting my own events at the age of 19 called Poetic Essence. I’ve been throwing poetry based events for 15 years. I have 2 books out, a poetic album, I’ve been featured in other magazines, performed at schools and influenced our youth. I plan to keep on going and doing more in the art world with my craft.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Being an expressive person isn’t always welcomed. I’ve had to be a voice not just for myself but for those whose stories I know. A lot of people can’t and won’t speak for themselves but I create to make more people aware of the human race as a whole and I focus on the fact that we all actually relate more than we think.

Also because I started my journey so young I had to go around to different venues in the Metro Atlanta community and show off my skills just so I could book places for my audience to come and enjoy themselves. I had to step up and be busy oriented and I didn’t have a team, I was by myself. All of those experiences built resilience in me and I’ll be pushing for a very long time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional spoken word artist. Every poem I perform or publish are original pieces. I’m known for hyping people up and if I know you write poetry, i actually train and practice with the artist until they are ready to get on a public stage.

I also do poetry classes where I’m able to teach young and old how to express themselves and believe in themselves and how they can have a voice.

I’m most proud in bringing people together. Over the years my events have gotten so popular that I’ve been able to have people from all of the nation to come in town and enjoy not just the Atlanta scene but also the poets that flood the streets. I feel like more people know what a heart sounds like outside of a heartbeat.

What sets me apart from others is that fact that I don’t do poetry because I’m money hungry. I do it for the love of helping humans heal themselves until they can find help if they want to seek it out. If they don’t, they know they can read their own progress and smile at how far they’ve gone in life. I also love as hard and as much as I can. I’m unforgettable and people only keep coming back because they know I lead with love. Jehovah God has taught me to move around the world that way and I’ll keep following his direction.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Funny enough, as outgoing and sometimes loud as I am, I am nervous before every show or performance. Even though in total I’ve been a spoken word artist for over 20 years, it still makes me shake just thinking about having to be in front of hundreds of people.
