Conversations with Takema Darby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Takema Darby.

Hi Takema, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for songwriting and hip-hop/R&B started with music videos that came on the BET. I used to study the lyrics of my favorite songs and favorite artist until I developed my own sound and voice. I started writing my own songs at age 11, but I started pursuing music professionally in 2012, when I turned 22. At first, it started off as a pipe dream; I just wanted to make money. Music was actually saving my mental health. As a black woman who lives and thrives with Bipolar and Schizophrenia, I found it important to talk about those things in my music along with my upbringing, childhood trauma, experiences and memories; I fell in love with telling my story, the art of telling our story.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not in the least! Somethings about my journey have been more enjoyable than others, but overall, I’ve learned a lot. When I first started making music, I just wanted to be rich. I never really dived deep into the business side and my ego was at the forefront of my career. Growing up you don’t really see the hard work and dedication that goes into treating yourself like a business. Coming from a small town with limited resources I kind of just have to learn as I grew. We didn’t have a lot of artist development opportunities where I’m from, so I taught myself and learned from a few others along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Singer-songwriter and hip-hop/R&B artist from Chattanooga, Tn. I’m also one of the founders of the nonprofit Music, Fashion, and Arts Foundation. I’m a full-time director of a child development center and I’ve been teaching for 17 years. However, music has always been my first passion. I’m know for my bold lyrics and live performances. I say what needs to be said! I love connecting with my listeners by writing songs people can relate to and telling my truth. I think my ability to tell a story and make it sound cool is what sets me apart from the rest. I think people want substance again without it sounding dated or boring. I also miss the traditional sense of songwriting and how lyrics use to matter.

Any big plans?
Yes, I just wrapped up my first ever album! I wanted to create a body of work that had highs, lows, fun, and storytelling. The process of making this album was challenging per usual, but I’m both proud and excited about the finished project and cannot wait to share this album with listeners and supporters.
