Conversations with Tasha Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Washington.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Our Family’s Favorite Bakery was born from a recipe, but its roots run much deeper than flour, sugar, and butter.

Growing up, my grandmother, Alma Louise, was known for her red velvet cake. It wasn’t just a dessert—it was a tradition, a staple at family gatherings, and quite honestly, everyone’s favorite. For years, she would tell me, “Tasha can make this cake.” But despite her confidence in me, I never believed it myself.

The truth is, I was always intimidated by baking and cooking. It felt overwhelming, and fear often convinced me that I wasn’t capable. So while my grandmother saw something in me, I spent years talking myself out of trying.

Then one day, something changed.

I decided to stop letting fear have the final say and gave her red velvet cake recipe a chance. I followed every step, hoping for the best but expecting very little. When the cake came out of the oven and I took that first bite, I was overwhelmed with emotion. It tasted just like hers.

I cried.

Not because I had baked a cake, but because in that moment I felt connected to my grandmother in a way I never had before. It felt like a piece of her had been passed down to me. What I once viewed as fear became confidence, and what started as one recipe became the beginning of something much bigger.

That red velvet cake opened the door to a journey I never saw coming. I began experimenting with flavors, sharing desserts with family and friends, and discovering a passion that had been hiding behind fear for years. The encouragement from others, along with the memories of my grandmother, gave me the courage to keep going.

Today, Our Family’s Favorite Bakery exists because of that leap of faith. The name itself is a tribute to the generations before me and the family who inspired it. Every dessert we create is made with the hope that it brings people together the same way my grandmother’s red velvet cake brought our family together around the table.

What began with Alma Louise’s recipe became a reminder that sometimes the things we’re most afraid to try are the very things we’re called to do.

And for me, it all started with one red velvet cake.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it always been a smooth ride? Absolutely not.

If I’m honest, some of the biggest challenges haven’t been the recipes, the orders, or even the long nights. The toughest battle has been getting out of my own head.

The moment something doesn’t turn out the way I envisioned it, self-doubt tries to creep in. I’ll start questioning whether I’m good enough, whether I’m doing the right thing, or whether I should even keep going. Entrepreneurship has a way of exposing every insecurity you thought you had conquered.

But quitting has never really been an option for me.

I’m so focused on seeing the outcome of my obedience that I refuse to let temporary setbacks determine my future. I truly believe God placed this journey on my heart, and every challenge has become an opportunity to trust Him a little more.

There have been mistakes, failed attempts, and moments when I wanted things to move faster. But each hiccup has taught me something valuable and pushed me to grow—not just as a baker, but as a person.

I’ve learned that faith isn’t believing everything will go perfectly. Faith is continuing to move forward even when things don’t go as planned.

So no, it hasn’t been smooth. But every obstacle has reminded me that the vision is bigger than the struggle. The setbacks may be real, but they don’t compare to the God who called me to this journey in the first place.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Our Family’s Favorite Bakery, we specialize in handcrafted desserts made with the belief that some of life’s best moments happen around the table. From cupcakes and cheesecakes to cake jars and our signature red velvet cake, every dessert is created with a focus on flavor, quality, and bringing people together.

What I’m most proud of isn’t necessarily a specific product—it’s the story behind it all and the community that’s been built because of it. This bakery was born from a family legacy. My grandmother, Alma Louise, was known for her red velvet cake, and what started as a recipe passed down through generations became the foundation for something much bigger. Today, I have the privilege of carrying that legacy forward and sharing a piece of our family’s story with others.

What sets us apart is that we’re not just creating desserts—we’re creating connection. Family is at the heart of everything we do. The name Our Family’s Favorite Bakery wasn’t chosen by accident. It reflects who we are and what we hope every customer experiences when they order from us. I want people to feel welcomed, celebrated, and cared for, whether they’re ordering for a birthday, graduation, family gathering, or simply because they deserve a sweet treat.

This journey has shown me that baking is about more than ingredients. It’s about legacy. It’s about preserving memories, creating new traditions, and passing something meaningful from one generation to the next. That’s why we use the scripture Genesis 17:7 as our tagline “From Generation to Generation.”

When people support Our Family’s Favorite Bakery, they’re getting more than dessert. They’re becoming part of a story that started with my grandmother’s red velvet cake and continues to grow with every family we have the honor of serving.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If there’s one thing I’d like readers to take away from my story, it’s that sometimes the things we’re called to do are hiding on the other side of our fear.

If you had asked me years ago if I’d own a bakery, I probably would have laughed. Baking wasn’t something I felt naturally confident in, and fear kept me from trying for a long time. But I’ve learned that obedience doesn’t require us to have all the answers—it simply requires us to take the next step.

My goal has never been just to sell desserts. My prayer is that through this business, people feel seen, loved, and valued. Whether it’s a birthday, graduation, anniversary, or a simple Tuesday that needs a little sweetness, I want every customer to know they’re more than an order number. They’re family.

The desserts may be what bring people through the door, but the relationships are what matter most to me. The cake, cupcakes, and cheesecakes are simply the icing on the cake.

At the heart of it all, I hope my story encourages someone to trust what God has placed in their heart. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to be fearless either… You just have to be willing. For me, that’s what this journey has always been about—faith, family, legacy, and leaving people better than I found them.
