Today we’d like to introduce you to Theo “TSAVO” Scott-Femenella.
Hi Theo “TSAVO”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been making music since I was a young kid, as a drummer and poet, performing on many stages with school groups and my own personal bands since I was in middle school. Hip Hop & Rap came naturally to me the experience I had with Rhythm & Poetry, and I spent my early 20’s honing that craft to cultivate TSAVO. TSAVO is Swahili for “the River”, I believe water flows with memories of many ancestors & the intention to connect all living beings. That’s the energy I bring to my music and why I chose that name, as well as its being a childhood nickname my father used to call me like the infamous Lions of Tsavo.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path has not been smooth at all. I often times found myself giving my all to create community and build foundations of support among the artists I helped elevate along the way, just to have many of these people betray me or simply try to bring me down out of their own envy & projections. Too many egos, folks forget the root of making music is genuine love and raising our vibrations to bring the village closer, not split us apart or divide. On top of that, I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome for a few years before I fully stepped into my power as an artist and said “fuck all the bullshit, I’ll create for me & the sake of my own spiritual calling because this is too important to the world for me to walk away”.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Hip Hop artist born & raised in Sacramento, CA! I am known for my conscious lyricism, rhythmic cadences and powerful stage presence whenever I am blessed to raise the vibration in a given space for the People. I specialize in combining Rap, Spoken Word & Drumming to bring my audience an authentic, unapologetically Black experience while opening up on my perspective of the world & our purpose here. I am most proud of the healing and uplifting any one of my songs or performances has brought the many souls I’ve crossed paths with on this artistic journey. I’ve performed in almost every big venue in Sacramento and can’t wait to take my music nationally & globally!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always an extroverted introvert who could do well in a crowded social space but preferred to be more low-key. I had many friends but few I was truly close with. Often times felt like I attracted many people’s energy but they never knew how to understand me. I was always desiring to create & had a huge imagination as a kid, picturing movies or scenarios in my head all the time while also making little poems or drumming in my garage to heavy metal music as a release. Like many kids, I grew up playing sports and was also fortunate enough to travel with my family, which really gave me confidence and a cultural connection to my community. My parents were educators and that influenced my upbringing as well.
