Conversations with Tukia Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tukia Allen.

Hi Tukia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started as a student at Aveda Institute Atlanta, where I received a full scholarship and was honored with the Full Potential Award at the end of that journey. After graduating, I trained at Van Michael Salon in Buckhead, one of the Southeast’s premier salon environments, before opening and operating my own salon, Studio Bold, for more than 16 years.

About nine years ago, I joined Aveda Institute Atlanta as an educator. Since then, I’ve grown through multiple leadership roles including Lead Educator, Admissions Manager, and now Educator Coach. Today I lead curriculum strategy, educator development, and educational outcomes for more than 130 students annually while managing a team of educators.

Along the way, I’ve had opportunities to contribute beyond the classroom through curriculum development, platform artistry at Aveda Congress, global curriculum collaboration with Vidal Sassoon in London, and industry media features in publications like Allure, Glamour, and Byrdie.

My career has really been a progression from artist to educator to leader.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges was learning the transition from artist to leader. As I advanced in my career, I realized success was no longer about my individual performance but about developing others and my passion grew for improving educational systems, particularly around textured hair education. Those challenges pushed me to become more strategic, build curriculum, coach educators, and ultimately create solutions that could scale beyond a single classroom. Looking back, those experiences shaped me into the leader I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work today is centered around education, artistry, and leadership. As Educator Coach at Aveda Institute Atlanta, I lead curriculum development, educator training, and build strong educational connections with the students.

I’m especially passionate about building lasting educational impact. One accomplishment I’m particularly proud of was creating a Texture Circuit lesson for curriculum and a high focus on a Curls & Coils where later I was able to contribute to a global curriculum collaboration between Aveda and Vidal Sassoon in London.

Beyond education, I have also had the privilege to work on marketing campaigns for our institutes that show the next level training initiatives tor our Institutes, but what sets me apart is my ability to connect artistry, education, and brand storytelling in a way that helps people grow while advancing the industry.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
No one achieves success alone. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors, leaders, colleagues, clients, and family members who have supported and challenged me throughout my career. From my education at Aveda Institute Charlotte to my Educator and Coach role at Aveda Institute Atlanta to my growth through leadership roles, each opportunity was made possible by people who invested in my development. Cartez Washington, my first industry Educator who shaped my love for cutting hair. Nadia Thrush of her leadership in creating a path of example, hard work and care to follow. Veronique Caldwell for her on campus support in my goals as my Director, and Traci Sakosits for seeing ME, supporting growth for me and nurturing it. Traci’s belief in me has shaped how I lead today and how I look at and care for my craft. She is also one of the reasons I’m passionate about mentoring and developing others in return. She is nothing short of Amazing. She is an industry leader, she is the Industry. And she is my mentor.
And 4 people especially that support me and push me to grow as they watch me regularly, and love me through all I do, dream of, and accomplish; my husband Steve Allen and our three children, Steven Jr., Nyla, and Ava Allen.
