Conversations with Yiyao Xia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yiyao Xia.

Hi Yiyao, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a graphic designer from China, Hangzhou. The reason I come to the US is I am fascinated by the design atmosphere in the US because there are a lot of art museums like MoMA PS1 and also variations of design styles. I graduated from SCAD in March and I found my passion in brand identity, typography, and motion.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It is never a smooth road. In SCAD, there are endless deadlines and too many assignments, which requires me to make good time management. In the first major classes, I have trouble in following up and take notes of professors because English is not my mother language. Worsely, I am a procrastinator and perfectionism. I usually started my assignment very late and stayed up for several nights. I changed the working style until my body gave me the sign.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My major is graphic design so I specialize in typography, branding, and motion. I love doing branding and I am also proud of my branding skill. I need to do research and dig out what is the special part about the brand and then translate the research and brand stories into visual languages, which is the most interesting part about the branding. It is like dressing your favorite doll and picking up the best color and clothes for its personality. I like to explore the possibilities of a logo like animating it, which sets me apart from others. I know how to use motion graphics to better present the personalities and differentiate it from others.

How do you think about luck?
I mean good luck and bad luck play the same role in my life. For good luck, it means positivity and encouragement for the things I am working on. For the bad luck, It means good luck will come soon.
