Conversations with Ziad Awwad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ziad Awwad.

Hi Ziad, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I opened my coffee shop in Ypsilanti with a simple vision: Create a space where quality coffee meets community. I’ve always had a passion for crafting great espresso and drinks made with care, but I also saw something missing nearby. Within three and a half miles, there wasn’t a single coffee shop where people could gather, relax, and feel at home.

I wanted to change that!

Stimulatte Cafe was built to be more than just a place to grab a drink, it’s a contemporary space where people can meet, study, laugh, and unwind. Whether you’re stopping in for a morning latte, enjoying breakfast or brunch, or settling in with pastries and your laptop, this is a place made for connection and comfort.

Every cup we serve reflects that purpose: quality, care, and community—made with love.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been a smooth road? Not at all—it’s been more like climbing Mount Everest.

One of the biggest challenges has been the location itself. Before we opened, the space had a history of inconsistency, frequent changes in hours, and operations left the community unsure if it was even open. Rebuilding that trust and showing people we’re here every day has taken time, patience, and persistence.

On top of that, the area had very little visibility. Limited lighting around the building made it harder to attract attention, especially in the evenings. And due to township zoning ordinances, we’re not allowed to use window lighting & outside signage to help draw people in, which most businesses rely on.

Building a steady customer base under those conditions hasn’t been easy—but we’ve stayed committed. Every day, we show up, keep our doors open, serve quality drinks, and continue earning the community’s trust one customer at a time.

Because in the end, this isn’t just about coffee—it’s about creating something lasting for Ypsilanti.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve worn many hats throughout my life, but one thing has always stayed the same—my passion for small businesses and the communities they serve. I believe in knowing the people who walk through my doors, understanding their needs, and treating them like family. That’s the foundation I’ve built, and it’s what I plan to continue as we grow our unique coffee shop.

What truly sets us apart isn’t just our coffee—it’s our people. We take pride in delivering exceptional, genuine customer service. Every person who walks in matters to us, and we make sure they feel it.

We’re not trying to be like the big chain coffee shops. Our focus is different. We stand for consistency, quality, and real care. It’s about remembering your name, your order, your story—and making sure every visit feels personal.

Because here, you’re not just a customer—you’re part of our community.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Before starting any small business, do your homework—seriously. Study the business inside and out so you understand the administration and operations even better than your employees. When you lead from knowledge, you lead with confidence.

Most importantly, be data-driven and informed. Know your numbers, but also know your environment. Study the area, understand who your customers are, what they need, and how they live day to day.

And don’t overlook the details—learn your city ordinances and zoning regulations early. Those rules can shape your entire business, from signage to operations.

Success isn’t just about passion—it’s about preparation, awareness, and making smart, informed decisions every step of the way.

I want to thank my employees, our Lead Luther, Isabelle, & KP. My children as well for helping to create a wonderful unique coffee shop for the community. Without them all, the coffee shop would not be open today
