Today we’d like to introduce you to Andres Cardenas
Hi Andres, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, where I pursued a degree in industrial design. My professional journey in the jewelry industry began with a company specializing in Colombian Emeralds, where I gained invaluable experience working with emeralds from the mine to the final piece. This period was marked by significant learning and many positive experiences. Simultaneously, I collaborated with five other contemporary jewelry designers on a project that involved participating in various events over a span of three years, further deepening my expertise in jewelry design.
My career took a new direction when I relocated to the United States, where I started anew. I began working from the ground up in a new country, learning a new language, and building a network from scratch. Initially, I engaged in arts and crafts fairs across Georgia, which eventually led to opportunities designing for ten different jewelers in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Today, I operate my own studio in Marietta, GA, where I specialize in the design and redesign of unique and exclusive jewelry pieces.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The process has been quite challenging. While I excel in design and interpersonal relations, I acknowledge that administrative tasks are an area of considerable difficulty for me. However, with focused effort and commitment, I am confident that any challenge can be successfully addressed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Through experience and interactions with various clients, I have recognized that in the market, there is a general lack of widespread knowledge about jewelry, precious stones, and different materials. As a result, I have chosen to emphasize SERVICE over the product itself.
I view my role primarily as an interpreter of my clients’ unique ideas, which I analyze and translate into jewelry designs. Additionally, I undertake numerous redesign projects, utilizing the original materials from pieces that no longer align with the owner’s personal style but still hold potential for new use.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
As a designer, it is crucial to listen attentively and appreciate the subjective nature of beauty. Embracing one’s strengths while acknowledging and addressing weaknesses is essential. Continuous learning from others is a vital part of the daily process.
