Daily Inspiration: Meet Breonna Collier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breonna Collier.

Hi Breonna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Photography has always been a part of my life. It started when I was a sophomore in high school back in 2011. At that time I received my first small camera as a gift from my mom and I used it to take pictures of any and everything. In my senior year of high school, I took a photography class that taught me the technicalities behind photography but truly, everything that I learned went in one ear and out the other. I didn’t consider myself an actual photographer at the time and I took the class solely because it was an option for an art elective. I’ve always had immense love and appreciation for all forms of art, and eventually, photography was a hobby that became a passion. It wasn’t until I moved to North Carolina that I realized I could turn one of my passions into a career.

In 2014 when I moved to Charlotte, I started to appreciate the world of beauty and fashion and my work reflected that. I worked with local models, makeup artists, and creatives to build my portfolio, grow my work, and get myself out there. Doing so many shoots for my portfolio and showcasing them publicly through social media led to me receiving inquiries about my photography services. From there, I took bookings while simultaneously building my portfolio and solidifying my photography style and overall artist identity. Fast forward a couple of years later, I am currently a full-time artist still learning, creating, and navigating my way through the industry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me personally, it has mostly been a smooth road. I do feel like some of the challenges I faced were when I first started out. I was incredibly young. Sometimes it felt as if I had more to prove as a young black woman because some people tested me and didn’t take me seriously. That problem has subsided since I’ve aged a few years. Entrepreneurship can be challenging especially as a creative. There are always ups and downs but it’s extremely rewarding to be able to do what you love for a living.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer that specializes in beauty and fashion photography. A lot of people can spot my work because of how sharp and detailed it is. I love close-up portraits and overall neutral aesthetics. I believe what sets me apart from others is my versatility when it comes to my work. Yes, I am known for my clean portraits but I also am able to adapt depending on the job. To date, I’m most proud of the perseverance and dedication that I’ve put into photography to get where I am today.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
As far as apps, I love the checklist app. Although I love to physically write down my tasks, that app has helped me stay organized and on top of everything I have to do. Podcast-wise, I absolutely love listening to Jay Shetty. He helps me stay inspired, optimistic, on track, and generally aware of everything on a personal and business level.
