Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad White
Hi Chad , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
There was a time where I used to read and watch an innumerable amount of entertainment news. Sites like AV Club (when it was good), podcasts like Comedy Bang! Bang!, watching any and everything I could — I was a fiend for staying current. During my sophomore year of college, I wanted to have the same effect on an audience of my own.
I started the website – C+ Comedy – with no plans on what to do. It was originally a bad execution of The Onion but I could never make my stories funny enough. I also included essays about whatever I could think of like how the world of Pixar’s “Cars” is completely messed up. Again, unfunny. However, I stuck with it. Mostly because I paid for the domain and Squarespace so I kind of had to. One aspect of the site stood out to me though.
Along with writing bad stories and essays, video was a big part of the first year of the site. A show called “News Time” became my haven for being silly while getting a point across. It was a mix of online fodder I’d seen on YouTube plus “Entertainment Tonight.” A good mix indeed. Eventually, I moved away from copying people I’d seen online to do my own thing. Soon, it would become the only thing C+ Comedy would produce. That is until I landed my first celebrity interview.
Almost exactly within the first year of starting the website, a public relations company reached out to me to speak with a comedian who was promoting his latest album and special. I said yes and, 11 years and close to 150 interviews later, I’ve become known around the entertainment world for my laid back, engaging chats. Now with video!
In between finding what I’m good at through video, I had to drop the comedy news element. It just wasn’t working. Also two actors I respect commented on stories I wrote negatively and I felt so bad that I stopped my whole fake The Onion shtick. However, I leaned into podcasts BEFORE they were big. So, you know, there’s that. When I’m asked what C+ Comedy is, I can now say it’s “entertainment business news” at its finest.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anyone who says it’s been easy to achieve their goal has never fully achieved their goal. C+ Comedy has, still has and will continue to have problems. For one, I don’t make a dime off of it. Not one. I choose not to put ads on the site because that’s not the point of it. It’s a catch all for whatever I’m working on. Second, the audience is only there for giant stars or of the moment podcasts. Every video that has a decent view count (re: more than 10) is due to old age and decent SEO practices. And, even though I have big enough reach to interview top talent, I still can’t get a yes automatically. It takes a lot luck and timing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m all for people being creative wherever they can. C+ Comedy came from me wanting to have an outlet to post on weekly.
I’m a champion of pushing others to their highest heights. Let’s succeed together! Never use “can’t” and always fight to the end. You’d think I’d be a coach. No way. I can only care so much.
I’m a TV producer by trade. It’s a bad idea but I love this industry. Which is odd considering how good most of my ideas are. There’s a lot of overhauling in entertainment that needs to be done. I want to help change everything.
What’s next?
I wish I could say I’m always trying to find something new. I’m not though. The most I’ll do right now is bring back a show that’s been on a long hiatus. I also want to get back to working full time in television. Freelancing blows! Other than that, I’d like to polish what I’ve done in order to get a bigger audience and make my skills that much better.
