Hi Christopher , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
At 39 years old, Christopher Hooker has built a career defined by creativity, resilience, and dedication. Born and raised in Newark, Chris developed a passion for fashion and design at an early age, using art and personal style as a form of expression growing up in one of New Jersey’s most culturally rich cities. Over the years, that passion evolved into a respected career in fashion design, where Chris became known for creating bold, innovative pieces that blend luxury, storytelling, and individuality. As a Black fashion designer, Chris has worked with a range of artists and entertainers in the music industry, contributing to major creative projects including tours, editorial magazine shoots, and custom styling productions. While building a name in fashion, Chris also dedicated nearly two decades to serving the community in healthcare. For 19 years, Chris worked as an EMT in the state of New Jersey, providing emergency medical care and support to countless individuals during critical moments in their lives. The experience shaped Chris’s discipline, compassion, and ability to remain calm under pressure — qualities that continue to influence both personal and professional life.
In addition to an accomplished career in emergency medical services and fashion, Chris is currently pursuing a nursing degree, further expanding a lifelong commitment to healthcare and helping others. Balancing the worlds of fashion and medicine, Chris represents a rare combination of artistry and service, proving that creativity and compassion can exist side by side.
Today, Chris continues to push boundaries in fashion while inspiring others through a journey built on perseverance, talent, and purpose. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. Growing up in Newark came with a lot of adversity and hard lessons early in life. Chris grew up in an urban environment where violence, poverty, and limited opportunities were realities that many young people faced every day. There were moments when it felt easier to give up than to keep pushing forward. Seeing people lose their lives, struggle with addiction, or become trapped by their circumstances had a deep impact and created constant pressure to either rise above those situations or become consumed by them. Financial struggles were also a major obstacle. Pursuing fashion was not always viewed as a stable or realistic career path, especially while balancing responsibilities and trying to survive in a city where resources were limited. There were times when Chris had to work long hours, sacrifice sleep, and put personal dreams on hold just to stay afloat. Building a name in fashion without major financial backing or industry connections required persistence, self-belief, and a willingness to work twice as hard to earn respect in competitive spaces.
Working as an EMT in New Jersey for 19 years also came with emotional challenges. Responding to emergencies, witnessing trauma, and carrying the responsibility of helping save lives can take a mental and emotional toll over time. Balancing that demanding career while pursuing fashion and attending nursing school often meant operating under pressure and exhaustion, but Chris remained committed to both service and creativity.
Despite the hardships, those experiences helped shape Chris into the person he is today. Growing up in an urban community taught resilience, adaptability, and humility. Instead of allowing difficult circumstances to become limitations, Chris used them as motivation to create opportunities not only for himself, but to inspire others who come from similar backgrounds. Every obstacle became part of the foundation that built the strength, vision, and determination behind his journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work focuses on fashion design with a strong emphasis on avant-garde and editorial couture. I specialize in creating statement pieces that push boundaries and tell stories through fashion. A lot of my designs are inspired by art, music, culture, and unconventional materials, which allows me to create looks that feel bold, theatrical, and original. I enjoy designing pieces that are not only visually striking, but that also make people feel confident, powerful, and unforgettable when they wear them. Over the years, I’ve worked with rappers, singers, and creatives on tours, performances, editorial shoots, and custom projects. My work has always been rooted in individuality, and I’ve become known for taking risks creatively rather than following trends. One of the biggest strengths of my brand is my ability to transform unexpected concepts into high-fashion couture pieces. Whether it’s constructing dramatic silhouettes, experimenting with textures, or reinventing everyday items into wearable art, I always try to create something people have never seen before.
One of the proudest moments in my career was a viral moment that elevated my business to a completely different level. Rapper Dream Doll wore a custom top that I designed using two New York Yankees fitted hats. The design immediately caught attention online because it was unconventional, creative, and culturally recognizable at the same time. Seeing the piece gain traction and go viral opened doors for my brand, brought new attention to my work, and showed people the level of creativity and craftsmanship I bring to fashion. That moment was important because it proved that originality still stands out in an industry where so many things can feel repetitive.
What I’m most proud of is the fact that I built my career while overcoming real-life challenges and balancing multiple responsibilities. At the same time that I was growing as a designer, I was also serving my community as an EMT in New Jersey and continuing my education as a nursing student. I take pride in being multidimensional and showing that creativity and service can coexist.
What sets me apart from others is my authenticity and perspective. I design from experience, emotion, and culture rather than trying to imitate what already exists. Growing up in Newark gave me a unique eye for resilience, expression, and individuality, and all of those experiences naturally show up in my work. My designs are meant to make people feel something, and I think that emotional connection is what truly separates my brand from others.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe the most important quality behind my success has been resilience. More than talent, connections, or recognition, it has been the ability to keep going through difficult situations, uncertainty, and setbacks that has truly carried me throughout my journey. Growing up in Newark taught me very early that nothing is guaranteed, and if you want something meaningful in life, you have to be willing to work for it consistently even when nobody sees your potential yet. There were many moments where things could have discouraged me from continuing. Balancing a demanding career as an EMT in New Jersey for 19 years while also pursuing fashion and attending nursing school required sacrifice physically, mentally, and emotionally. There were long nights, moments of self-doubt, financial struggles, and times when opportunities did not come as quickly as I hoped. Fashion is also a very competitive industry, and as a Black designer from an urban community, there were moments where I felt overlooked or underestimated. But I learned that resilience is not about pretending things are easy — it is about continuing to believe in yourself and your purpose even during difficult seasons.
Another quality that has been important to my success is humility. I never want to feel like I am bigger than the people who supported me or the community that shaped me. No matter what opportunities I receive or who I work with, I still see myself as someone who is constantly learning and evolving. I understand that success is not something achieved alone. It comes from the support of family, mentors, clients, friends, and the experiences that help shape you along the way. Staying humble keeps me grounded and reminds me why I started creating in the first place.
I also think authenticity has played a major role in my growth. I never tried to completely fit into what other people expected fashion to look like. My designs come from my experiences, my environment, music, culture, and emotion. Whether I’m creating avant-garde couture pieces or editorial concepts, I try to make work that feels genuine to me instead of chasing trends. I think people connect with honesty and originality, and that connection is something I value deeply.
At the end of the day, I am most proud that my journey represents perseverance. Everything I have accomplished came from hard work, patience, and refusing to give up on myself despite obstacles. If my story inspires anyone, I hope it shows them that where you come from does not have to limit where you can go.
