Daily Inspiration: Meet Jabari Hicks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jabari Hicks.

Hi Jabari, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I originally picked up a camera to contribute to the change of imagery being pushed to the forefront in the black community with visions of a YouTube channel. I knew absolutely nothing about a camera or creation seeing as though I am a welder by trade. So self-teaching began by way of Google and YouTube. Fast forward about six months and my day was starting with a conversation on set with Tip. My mind was blown and I just knew I had found my way by landing an internship with a popular celebrity content creator. I immediately jumped off the cliff. Quit my job and rearranged my life to suit my newfound career., at least I thought. It was a gift and a curse, I gained a world of knowledge at the expense of stability. I lost my equipment and had to start at square one once again. Nearly two years passed before I was able to get another camera and get started again. I re-branded and named my company after my newborn now three years old son Royale. He is my why making my passion and drive ascend to the next level. Attention to detail and knowledge of professional sets and projects has helped me tremendously. I can only imagine where this path will lead but I am ready.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not an easy road. Losing everything the first attempt really had me rethinking if this was my actual path. Also, dealing with the stigma of male photogs having anterior motives and predatory behavior has at times been challenging also when acquiring new model clientele. I am up for the challenge as persistence and professionalism will trump all.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Portrait and boudoir have been my strong areas as well as content creation as a genre on its own. Consisting of video, stills and production. I take pride in my high-end skin retouching and classy presentation. Attention to detail is at the top of my agenda as I never change a models look only enhance what God has made. No phone apps, plug ins or pre paid panels, Photoshop is all I use to bring a shoot to life, with a fast turnaround to try and separate myself from other photogs in Atlantas saturated market.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
There is no place like Atl, where our community is thriving working together having success and producing some of the most industry influencing content in history.

Due to the over-saturation and the Atlanta culture of being around celebrities for promo and “exposure” it has driven the value of our craft down tremendously to those just starting out or still not quite known as of yet.
