Daily Inspiration: Meet Kevin Chiu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Chiu.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m an artist from Taiwan. I discovered my love for art during high school, and it has been my passion ever since. In 2018, I came to the United States to pursue new opportunities. Animation and comics have always held a captivating allure for me. It was this enchantment that led me to pursue a degree in Illustration at the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design. Currently, I work as a designer and illustrator at Black Math, where I have the privilege of bringing my creativity to life. I’m excited about the future and the challenges it holds.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to pursuing art has been a fulfilling yet challenging journey. While my passion for art has always burned brightly, it hasn’t always been a smooth path toward achieving my goals.

One of the significant struggles I encountered was the transition from Taiwan to the United States in 2018. Immersing myself in a new culture and navigating unfamiliar territories presented its fair share of obstacles. Adapting to a different educational system and acclimating to a new creative landscape required resilience and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone. However, through these challenges, I discovered my inner strength and determination to pursue my artistic aspirations.

What I am most proud of is the ability to translate complex ideas into visually compelling narratives. The art of storytelling is at the core of my work, and I strive to create visuals that not only captivate but also communicate a deeper message. The satisfaction of seeing my art come to life and resonate with audiences is immeasurable.

Color and light are vital components of my creative process. I strive to transport viewers to a different world or evoke a specific ambiance through the careful manipulation of atmospheric elements. From the misty haze of a forest to the ethereal glow of a starry night, I pay meticulous attention to detail to create immersive and evocative settings. This attention to atmospheric nuances helps to create a sense of depth, realism, and emotional connection in my artwork.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The process of creating art itself has taught me the value of patience and persistence. It is not always a smooth road, and there are times when inspiration may wane or ideas may not materialize as expected. However, by embracing the process and staying committed to my artistic vision, I have discovered hidden depths of creativity and unlocked new possibilities.
